Introduce teaching new players of double-click mechanics within NPE

A lot of the times I am seeing, that new players are unaware that they can navigate the space via the use of double click, or q-click-click, and think that they are stuck with approach/orbit/first-person mode navigation methods.

So I would suggest making some sort of slalom course at some point in new player experience (either within tutorial itself, or within missions of career agents), that couldn’t be completed via “approach”, but rather where one must use double-click, or q-click-click to complete it (where those would be explained to new players). So at least new players would know of this mechanic, and not rely on others to tell it to them.

Interesting side note, the ORE epic arc they added has a mission with a minefield, which would be a great place to introduce the mechanics you mention, but those missions have weird camera restrictions like disabled tactical overlay.

Adding it to the career agents sounds like a good idea to me.

NPE is to get a new player basic familiarity with the game mechanics, not detail every single nuance the game has to offer. If you have to be told every single little basic thing, and are unwilling or unable to figure anything out on your own, this isn’t the game for you.

99.998% of the game doesn’t require double-click navigation, and when new players are being taught the parts that do need it, like spiraling in PvP, they are told about it immediately.

Yes, I understand that there are a lot of mechanical nuance in EVE, that you cannot cram everything into NPE. However, I see this as a trivial addition, that could be written into an existing content. Like a small zigzag section in the tutorial, or some career agent mission.

PvP is not the only use. I see plenty of times where people ask in rookie help about being stuck on some object unable to warp, where suggestion is to just double click out of said object. Which makes me wonder what is a part of people who don’t even bother to ask, and leave.

I am suggesting that new players would at least be told of such navigational possibility, and given a brief practice run. If they end up using - that’s up to them. But at least they’ll know, in theory.

Yes, and you know what we call the NPE with every single trivial addition included? We call that Highsec.

Rookie Help is the perfect place for trivial niche use mechanics like this.

Yeah, I see what you mean, that “where does one stop adding things to avoid becoming too bloated”. But after

  • seeing this sort of “question” being very common only when some issue happens, that requires the use of it
  • not being very obvious in how to search for it, without already knowing about it “e.g. keywords of manual piloting”, and
  • many sentiments by various new people outlining their surprise in why it wasn’t covered in tutorial, as they assumed that only navigation was via right click, or buttons in selected items panel.

I think that it warrants at least a mention. As for me it seems that this feature is the most universally useful hidden feature, that new players are surprised in hearing of existing.

Not to mention that not every player trying out the game wants to delve into social interactions straight out of the gate to even ask such a question. Yes, EVE is VERY social game. But I really don’t expect for everyone to dive into chats to ask questions on day 0.

So I see where you are coming from. But I also see that the benefits of adding this into NPE would outweigh the downsides. While also understanding that everyone thinks that everyone thinks that their suggestion warrants adding
