I don’t think it’s gambling with real money as you can’t (legally) sell isk or items from the game and the items (both used in the raffle and ingredients) are in-game assets. More like a grey area. Umm… gambling with extra steps? A lottery? In countries where gambling is illegal/ heavily regulated there are state-owned lotteries and it’s fine (even kids can participate) because the govt. gets a cut…
If you push the definition hard enough every game with rng (even cardboard d&d) can be considered gambling :3
I don’t like it, but since every other company is doing it seems like CCP had to as well… Their timing was just few years off. Lootboxes are popular “streamable” content too (sadly).
But you can technically do that. And law doesnt prohibit you from it. Nobody ever goes to jail for RMT. Look how it looks in Korea, where gaming is everpresent, and Koreans are ahead in field of law in regard to gaming.
Thats why in Korea game is +18 and you have gambling warning.
There is difference between game of chance and game of skill, and game of skill sometimes can have elements of chance. In case of HypernNet Relay game feature, there is no skill involved, only chance.
Even if we put aside the claims that the HyperNet gambling is illegal and/or unethical, there is a serious problem remaining which regards the spirit of the game.
We would all like to see new, diverse mini-games added to eve, as long as they contribute to the experience which we call New Eden. But what can a raffle mini-game, of all things, add to the experience? How can the equivalent of old ladies’ bingo contribute to the sense that we are in the middle of a dangerous, torn-up and mysterious universe? This is like adding a cooking mini-game to eve.
I find this gambling platform repulsive and disgusting; but, more importantly, I find it unrelated to the game.
As some of you may know, CCP is a producer competing with many other providers offering a similar kind of space game. Therefore, it is particularly important in the highly competitive game market to find its niche and make a varied offer to the player community. In my opinion, the right way is to make the game experience varied in order to reach a large proportion of players who certainly do not all have the same ideas from different regions of the world.
Here is a Link from a post that brings a little more light into the topic.
It doesn’t add anything to the lore or the game itself, but eve is 95% metagame and out-of-game tools (pyfa, google docs, evepraisal, zkill, pathfinder, dotlan…) I remember blink being a thing and something we would do during pos bashing.
That would be under the online gambling of the Bill and covered by A2578. This was introduced after April 15, 2011, when the US Department of Justice successfully blocked four online gambling sites from accepting American customers (by seizing their domain name). One of the main arguments for this action was the inability of the sites to verify the age of its customers.
So, if you have a 19 year old who gambles in eve online and their guardian makes a legal complaint to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) - a lawyer representing the guardian could apply for the temporary seizure of www.eveonline.com domain whilst the case is being resolved. The US Department of Justice could do this and has done so in the past.
Except, Real life monies have to be used to purchase a gambling token for this raffle - as opposed to real life monies being used to purchase subscription to a game which has a raffle built in.
You can NOT set 1k nodes as the options are 8,16,48 or 512. That’s it.
Secondly, if it doesn’t complete for any reason, the isk paid for nodes is returned. ONLY the money for the Hypercore used to set up the gambling is lost.
Here is what you need to know. It is. It really is. You can convert isk to PLEX to sub time, therefore gaining something with “real world value”.
Additionally, the Hypercores can ONLY be originated in the NES for rl money/PLEX bought with rl money. So there is your rl money AND your rl benefit.
Korean law states you can exchange virtual money for real. So its like the value is there. Like with chips in cassino. These are not worthless internet points like likes on forums.
But maybe I could even find a person who would pay for that. Only thing is I need good marketing department.
I have voted for you every year you have run (with all my accounts). I have also campaigned for you with everyone in EVE that I know. Yours is a very unique perspective on the CSM. If you bow out, we will likely just get another rep from another power block which serves few if any other than themselves.
Tune out the haters. Run again!
