EvE isn’t a sandbox, the way CCP keep manipulating the game, trying to force you to play the way they want you to play. It really isn’t a sandbox.
Only real sandbox game I’ve played was Saga of Ryzom and since it went open source players have changed it to such an extent even that isn’t a sandbox any longer.
as stated this is working as intended. gradual ramp up to enough NPC miners to strip the majority of systems within 2 hours after daily downtime. This forces great competition and keeps botters at bay.
All industrialists and miners should be happy about these fleets.
You could shoot them though to claim more ore for yourself as was intended also…
From my understanding the term is used to refer to games where most of the agency is up to the player, for example setting their own goals and making their own fun. The game itself is, for the most part, just a framework for enabling player agency.
By that definition :-
Minecraft is a sandbox game, everything is up to you.
GTA 5 is a sandbox game, you can choose to ignore the story driven content and do as you please, even more so in online mode.
ARMA 3 is a sandbox game, everything is up to you.
Eve Online is a sandbox game, you can choose to ignore the mission content and do as you please.
Sanbox is basically a sandpit with tools so that you can use those tools how you like. Minecraft although I’ve not played it from what I’ve read is just that.
Problem with EVE is that missions give you an advantage due to the rep. with NPC corps so if you want to stay competitive you would need to focus on improving that rep. You can avoid raising your rep. but it won’t do you any favours if competition is tight.
Over 10 years ago I’d have said EVE was a sandbox style game these days I wouldn’t even call it that.
The way the game has been going, I mean Trig, invasions for instance they’re not player driven and you can’t really avoid them if they turn up on your doorstep.
CCP part of the problem, taxes on NPC corps, trying to get players into player corps. result loads of solo corps.
CCP, think it was on the old graphics engine kept moving things around to try and spread players out more as that engine was at the top of it’s limit and they were fighting lag issues. Had mission givers sending you into low sec more, result players moved away from mission givers near low-sec.
CCP have tried to manipulate what the players do by various ploys over the years which often backfired.
A sandbox really should be a setting and the tools for players to do as they please within reason (keeping it within the law).
You’ve failed to explain why any of the above fail this test though.
Creeps in Minecraft aren’t ‘Player driven’ either. You have to do certain things to achieve certain outcomes. I.E. Nether gates, Food etc.
Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make it not ‘within reason’
Thought I recognised him - Is that the character ‘Creedy’ ? If so, the actor (Tim Piggot-Smith) was Head Boy at my school more decades ago than I care to remember
