Launcher going black

Under Windows 10, the launcher has started to just sometimes turn into a black square for me.

I can still drag it around, minimizing it then maximizing it (using OS controls) can sometimes make the graphics appear again, sometimes I have to close it.

Next time it happens open Task Manager and see if it’s using 100% CPU.

Same issue here.

Killing and restarting solves it though.

Has been an issue for months. I mentioned it a few times, but CCP has not done anything. They bank on the fact that users should just close and re-open it to fix their programming issues.

It still has its buttons, though. The top right corner still works as the Close Window X.

I have the same problem.

This is still an issue - and very anoying, as it happens all day long.

same problem here. Launcher constantly going black. Looks like the launcher is ridden with bugs of all kinds. Before it went black, the launcher used to freeze up.

resizing the window helps too, but nonetheless, its ANNOYING AS F*CK!!!

Windows 11 24H2 I click the launcher icon on the taskbar which minimizes it and then i click it again which brings it back up again and presto the blackness is removed. Either way a bit annoying, but can at least avoid killing and relaunching.

It’s using virtually no CPU.

Yup, same issue here. I just came back to the game after a very long break, and have a completely new computer built since the last time I played.

Launcher will go to a black screen. After this happens, I get a weird ongoing effect in game: the mouse will slow down to a crawl, then a few seconds later, the screen will go black for about five seconds, then everything comes back to normal. This happens continuously, but at random intervals. It’s like the GPU driver crashes and then recovers.

I should note that only in-game goes back to normal, the launcher window stays black until it’s killed from Task Manager.

Windows 11, fully updated, no third party anti virus, fresh (full) install of EVE, EVGA 2080 Super with latest drivers. Verified game files. In game, used the options to reset everything that could be reset (cache, etc.).

Still no help.

Edit: Additional hardware info: AMD 3090x CPU, 32G RAM, MSI ACE 570 mobo, no overclocking at all.

same issue. 2nd gpu, reinstalls and reconfigs. Launcher can be closed by clicking top right corner, and moving to other screen or resizing solves the problem.

This is almost certainly unrelated to the launcher issue.

My guess is - check the Raytracing / upscaling crashes game threads for the errors in CCP testing their raytracing shadows on Live.

OK, so I had “EVE LogLite” running, and when I got the mouse cursor slows down, game flashes to black screen and then comes back issue, I went to the LogLite log, and found this: DX11 device removed, reason: 0x887a0006

Switching to DX11 does make the frequency of the in game issue less frequent, and it’s faster to recover from it.

OK, so I found the culprit. The reason I was getting the “DX11 device removed, reason 0x887a0006” error in LogLite, which was causing the in game problem of the mouse cursor slowing down, window eventually freezes, screen goes black, then everything goes back to normal was…

My new USB external backup drive. I’ve scoured the internet for this error, and it turns out it’s fairly common. One common theme I found was that often times the error was corrected by removing attached USB storage devices.

My trusty old external backup USB hard drive failed last week, after dutifully performing nightly backups of my entire system for ten years. I replaced it with a new drive, and I thought it had been working fine; all backups have proceeded as normal. But I either have a bad USB cable, or a bad USB slot on my mobo (or possibly a bad SATA to USB board in the drive enclosure), as removing the drive has allowed me to play EVE all day long without a single occurrence of this problem. I was averaging about ten minutes between occurrences, so going this long is enough to convince me that this was, indeed, the problem.

TL;DR: If this particular error code hits you, try removing every USB device you can and see if it fixes it. Then add your USB devices back one at a time…. you know what? I’m sure you can figure out the rest of the procedure yourself. : )

END TL;DR

To EVE Dev’s credit, most games don’t gracefully recover from this condition; they’ll either CTD or throw up a dialog box with the error code, and then exit the game. EVE, OTOH, gracefully reloads the GPU driver and continues running. Well done, devs… well done.

Now to get back to re-learning this amazing game…. one pod at a time. XD

So, removing external USB mad the launcher stop going black?

Whoops, I should have made that more clear… I had TWO problems going at the same time, and I thought they were related, but they weren’t. 1. Launcher window going completely black. 2. In game issue described in a couple posts earlier.

While I was able to clear up the in game issue, I am STILL having the black screen in launcher issue, although it is intermittent.

I wonder if this cr*p is going to be fixed at some point in the twenties..

Wasn’t this fixed with the 1.11.1 version of the launcher? It is mentioned in the changelog?

I have 1.11.1 and its still happening.
