There are times when we need to keep an eye on d-scan, and basically sit there pushing the button every couple of seconds, often for quite extended periods of time. I doubt any of us enjoy doing this, but we understand the need for an active mechanism to maintain vigilance: just having an effortless auto-repeat wouldn’t be good for the game. Previous threads on this topic here have gone into great detail why.
So how about having the d-scan repeat as long as the Eve client has focus and the mouse pointer is over the scan button (after you press it once)? Maybe just a limited number of times, say a dozen or so, and maybe a little less frequently that you could do it manually. And have any hotkey reset it as well. Maybe the parameters like maximum repeats could be dependent on the security status of the system you are in. The repeat timing should also probably be done in server ticks not real seconds, so that it slows down with TiDi.
With this mechanism you’d still need to be somewhat active with your d-scan, but it would reduce the number of RSI-inducing clicks by an order of magnitude.
It wouldn’t result in everyone d-scanning all the time (with the resulting increase in server load), because you can’t actively play the game with your mouse pointer stuck over the scan button.
I guess so. I’d rather focus on mitigating specific concerns than a blanket d-scan nerf if auto-repeating though. Also, CCP might find it easier to implement if it could be done client-side only.
The only macros I ever used pushed multiple keys at once, to save me the effort. Given that they didnt do antyhing that would be impossible to achieve with 2 hands I was completely fine using them. Used them for years, never had anyhting flagged.
I didn’t say anything about EULA. But macros and foot pedals have nothing to do with the suggestion from this thread, and I wouldn’t like to see it disrailed.
Also I play mostly on steam deck so I have V mapped to L5, a button on the back of the device I operate with my left middle finger. It just becomes muscle memory. Biological automation.
I personally have it mapped to a function key so I don’t have to worry about what has the input focus.
However, it doesn’t matter whether its a mouse click or a key press, doing it every couple of seconds for long periods of time isn’t particularly good for you.
It is gratifying to see that no-one can think of any specific downsides to the idea though.
You mean all the times this same suggestion has popped up on the forums in one shape or another, no single argument against was valid enough in your opinion ?
The dscan (limited) edition you’re proposing is used for defensive purposes only. An active hunter doesn’t want automated dscan pulsing, a hunter is busy pinpointing on narrow angle. Imagine the ruckus if hunters would start asking for automation to dscan all celestials, anoms and belts on 5 deg angle or determine the exact distance And that too would be a perfectly legit request while we’re at it.
What is the counterplay to automation ? There isn’t one, unless one designs something like a penalty at the same time e.g., an automated “dscan pulser” becomes a localized blip on a solar system map like the F11 map bottom panel or an entry on the Overview… or some other new method the devs can think of.
You can’t simply modify the manual dscan with some level of automation, which defeats the purpose of active presence and attention. On the other hand one could overhaul it completely and make some interesting new gameplay via active / passive radar systems.
As it stands now, dscan is like passive sonar with a “listen now” button. And it is able to give a lot of intel. Suggestions in the sense of “I don’t like pushing this button so often” do nothing for interesting gameplay. The choice not to push V should be a deliberate one. Fair is fair, and targets are targets.
