Has anyone considered a Long Range Medium lift Jump freighter?
My thoughts… Kinda the DHL / Fedex of the eve universe.
- Jump Freighter capable of carrying 2 packaged battleships and the fit? up to 120,000 m3
- Same basic characteristics of the Jump Freighters, with Increased range of 25-40 lightyears
- Only to a Hard Cyno, not industrial.
- Fuel costs of 1.5-3.0 times of a Jump Freighter
- Able to use any type of Fuel Isotopes.
On the opposite side of the spectrum for Corp and Alliance moves a Titan sized Jump Freighter, with similar jump ranges of a Titan with 20-25 Mil m3 cargo
I feel like transportation already is easy enough as it is.
Of course it can always be made easier but there is such a thing as ‘too much convenience’, which tends to have the side-effect that it removes or diminishes other aspects of the game.
A big example of ‘too much convenience’ I personally experienced is how in World of Warcraft people eventually got the ability to automatically queue up with random players to be teleported to a dungeon of their choosing, rather than the old ‘inconvenient’ effort of gathering a group through chat and traveling across the world to the location of that dungeon. Even though people conveniently could do many more dungeons in the same time, the entire ‘world’ of Warcraft aspect got lost as people teleported anywhere without sense of where those dungeons even were in the fantastic world that game made. And people much more often turned out to be dicks when they didn’t have to ‘inconveniently’ socialize in order to get a group together and finish the dungeon with the same people.
World building and socially pleasant groups were sacrificed for more convenient and faster dungeons. I liked running those with random groups as healer or tank, and enjoyed the higher rate of dungeons, but did recognise the things ‘more convenience’ sacrificed.
In EVE the convenience of jump drive freighters for example largely removed the need of freighter escort activities. Nowadays you rarely see fleet cooperation to move goods, unless it’s a particularly large moveop like I’ve been in last week when my alliance had their annual moveop to a new region.
Your suggestion of ‘even longer jump ranges!!’ would diminish the need for even such coordination when freighters can even bypass regional gates and hostile constellations with a ridiculous 40 LY jump range.
The game doesn’t need to become easier.
Moving stuff doesn’t need to become easier.
Last week I’ve seen my entire alliance pack up and move their stuff three regions over. It works and doesn’t need to become easier.
Have you tried putting the battleship in an Orca and using null sec filaments or wormhole shortcuts until you land in the region of your choosing?
40 ly may be may a little on the long side, but it would be a nice additions to corps that are not part of a larger organization or the need to get something deep into an area where resources are limited. As far as the idea of being too easy, not sure I agree with the premises. Another tool or way to make isk and provide a service. Thank you for your thoughts and insights, we all live in our own little worlds and differing opinions are refreshing.
The problem is that such large jump ranges trivialize hauling and make the layout of regions irrelevant; you just jump from HS to deep NS and back to the edge of HS again, or skip multiple regions for NS → NS travel.
Jump freighter pilots already provide a service, why not try one of those?
Wormholes my dude. It may take a little while to find a suitable one, but a k-space to k-space hole should be able to take three freighters.
