With each different fit comes a different set of appropriate warp-to, orbit and keep-at distances. Blaster Cormorants and Rail Cormorants are good examples of this being not just ship based but fit based.
Being able to set those in the fitting screen and have them applied when loading the ship seems like a QOL improvement - I’ve forgotten to adjust those I don’t know how many times after reshipping. The existing functionality can be preserved by including a ‘Current Default’ option for each which would not reset the distances upon ship loading.
A perhaps cleaner user experience might be to simply set an ‘Engagement Distance’ in the fitting screen and then set the default warp-to, orbit and keep-at distances to ‘Engagement Distance’ when boarding the ship. An unspecified ‘Engagement Distance’ would keep the current default mechanics.
