Really enjoyed seeing the universe in this way. I think Newbros will be curious as to why the upper-right systems have no connections or why Pochven is one big looping triangle. This is visible in 3D view but it stands out more prominently in 2D view. It kinda reminds of of a world map of a traditional MMORPG.
I’d like to see system names on each node. Even if it uses that proximity cursor view. Overall I quite enjoyed it.
The new map looks great. It’s very detail rich and sure to keep some of us busy for hours. It would be a bit easier on the eyes if the regions had a coloured background or some sort of border to tell one region from the next when zoomed up. I was a bit disappointed that cynosural beacons didn’t appear to show on the map and that I couldn’t jump to an active cyno from the map. But I can’t wait to see the final results!
Isn’t it time for a new Project Discovery already? I’maxed out on it on all my characters – i.e. got to level 500 beyond which there really is no point to do it anymore.
I didn’t open 3D map like ever, absolutely useless
I met a few players like you who used 3D map. Either they didn’'t know about Map: Lonetrek - DOTLAN :: EveMaps or they refused to use it believing they can do anything they need in 3D map.. And sure they probably can, just 10 times more slower than ´those of us using 2D map.
I can’t imagine using current ingame map to figure out where did the player I am chasing went and which gate should I take to not lose him. Impossible task.
You reallize the 3D space is there just for show? All controls are in 2D text windows or special UI. There are a few situations where you might want to zoom in, rorate the camera and click into 3D space but those are very rare and you don’t really need to do it.
Overall the 2D map makes a great first impression!
The ‘details’ popping up around the cursor at certain zoom levels (e.g. sovereignty) is interesting but I would probably prefer a different transition style. Instead of ‘popping into existence’ I would prefer a fading in and out, or even a gradient around the cursor. Currently it feels a bit too nervous to me with stuff quickly showing up and disappearing again.
I’m not sure why, but I somehow expected that the map would zoom in the area where the mouse cursor currently is. I find that more intuitiv on a 2D-map, probably because Google Maps has conditioned me that way. Maybe this could be a setting that can be toggled on/off.
For long connections between systems where the connected system is not on the screen: Would be nice to see a description of the connection it leads to instead of having to move the map or zoom out. For example if you hover over the system connection line then it shows you the info of the connected system or the ‘out of sight’ system node shows up at the border of the screen, where the line ends.
I like that the jump bridge connections remain 3D. Gives it a holographic feeling that could be leveraged to combine different info. For example the first layer one could select cyno fields (would show up as currently implemented in the system nodes) and on the second layer the sovereignty (could be represented by background color behind the systems or as a ‘cloud’ above them).
Transitions when switching between 3D map and 2D is smooth but somehow there is usually quite some movement from left to right and vice versa. I wonder if this can be reduced although I could understand why it won’t be possible due to the necessary distortions.
It’s lovely but I probably won’t use it much. I internalized DOTLAN’s layout years ago and have many of its functions hotkeyed. I won’t learn other stuff unless it’s quite a bit more useful.
Have y’all asked Wollari if he’d sell it? I’m not the only one whose sense of place in EVE is shaped by it. DOTLAN in the client and spruced a bit would be swell.
Some actual feedback on the 2D map: indicate the currently-focused system somehow. Since color is used for data, maybe change it from a circle to a polygon. Anything to say “this is what you clicked” or “this is what you chose to ‘Show on Map’ elsewhere in the client”.
The spolight-style data infill is frustrating (i.e. data only shows if the cursor’s close enough).
Others have already said the data disappears at too low a zoom level. I agree.
Constellation connections could stand to be differentiated from regionals.
This’d require lots of attention for custom pathing, but I’d prefer if long connections kinked or even curved around other regions/systems rather than going through them, and then they could be made brighter without hurting readability, and then the map’s interconnectedness would be readily apparent. Also, some regions (e.g. The Spire) have umpteen dense super-long constellation/region connections making messy distracting patterns behind them.
Outta scope, but since you mentioned custom filters: the ability to highlight arbitrary systems by pasting in CSV would be tremendously useful and might tempt me to interact with the map. It’d be even more useful if you could save & share the filters (and this might be straightforward to code using EVE’s ancient HTML formatting). Many such filters come to mind because they’re all easy and fast to make and commonly shared via 3rd party tools. I’ll rattle off a few:
unpublished data (JO, victory/fortress, C729, non-kickout NPC, EVE-scout)
systems you wanna krab up or suppress for ADM
infrastructure locations and notable chokepoints/camp spots
jump range overlap areas between specific origin(s) & target(s)
i’ve tried it out and have to say that the improvements are good, but not for the 2D-Map and for my taste you deal with a 3D-Environment the fact that the map is like the game itself isn’t a bad thing.
if you would add the improvements to the 3D-Map it would make more sense.
