Mining Barges for Alphas Megathread

Sounds like you’re just mad you don’t have a job? If you can’t afford Omega, you probably shouldn’t be spending so much time in a video game anyways

Patronising idiot. I am Omega. I am just pointing out that you are spouting rubbish. Your ad hominem attack completely evades the fact that CCP now advertise this game as free to play - Alpha is no longer a demo or trial status. It is precisely as @Mkikaden_Tiragen states.

To be clear: Alpha is still functionally a non-time-limited game demo, since the paid mode is a subscription state. CCP doesn’t market it as a free trial now because the common consumer expectation of a free trial is that it is time gated, and that puts a lot of people off even trying the game. They also fo not market it as a demo due to the expectation that gives of a solo environment not connected to other players. But from a mechanics function it is an introductory state that allows potential new subscribers to thoroughly explore the basics of the vast majority of game components and decide if the game is sufficiently engaging to be worth subscribing for additional accesses.

I had a paid subscription years ago, but canceled it because I just was not having fun. I could not find a corp with mature adults, and I got tired of the fact that so many people in-game were only interested in pvp combat. I have never been interested in combat.

I returned to Eve only because I learned that the no-pay alpha account had been made available. At the time I really needed something to take my mind away from real-life difficulties.

Now I am considering reactivating my old paid account for 3 months, simply because I need something “new” as a distraction from this awful pandemic. Back in the day I had a 1-man corp because I just could not find mature adults to game with. If I am able to reactivate that old account I expect the situation with the other people who play this game to be exactly the same, so I will continue doing what I am doing now with my alpha account: mining in hi-sec, producing stuff, selling stuff. Only at a higher level.

Thank-you. A good response.

Alpha clines add a lot to life in New Eden and I am glad to see them, and I say that as a long standing subscriber.
They do add to activities in the game: they are effective sub-capital pilots, and as you point out can contribute economically - though not on the same scale and impact as an Omega clone for good balance reasons. But it is enough for you to see if it’s an aspect of life here that you life.
And with a little gumption and courage, the tools an Alpha have can be very useful. I still buy and use Ventures, they are often the best tool for the job.

That is exactly what alpha status is. It’s a trial account that is restricted from content and items, and not by time. Now, we could argue whether that falls under “Free To Play” category, which is how the game is being advertised, but how the game is being advertised doesn’t change how alpha accounts function.

Hey bro. Might want to check out the recruitment section. There are definitely some mature, PvE focused groups out there. Some will even say they are looking for mature players in their corp ads. So, you just have to shop around. And if you find a group isn’t a good fit, you can always bounce.

Limited does not equal demo or trial. It just means limited but free to play, and has a definite function for involving the casual player. How the game is advertised, and alpha accounts are advertised, is absolutely critical to how one defines them - anything else is cognitive dissonance: one is insisting on applying terms such as trial or demonstration to classify alpha, ignoring the evidence that said classification is now wrong. Of course, none of these semantics would matter a hoot, except when people then, somewhat arrogantly, claim in these fora that alphas do not matter because they are just trial or demo accounts…

Goodnight all.

First, I don’t think anyone in here said alphas do not matter. In fact, at least two people in this thread have specifically said that they do.

Second, advertisements don’t define a product. They can create certain expectations, which may or may not be met by the product, but they are not critical to how they are defined. For example, a lot empty-calorie, high-sugar, breakfast cereals get marketed as “part of a healthy breakfast” here in the states. However, that doesn’t make them healthy, and you would be ill-advised to make judgements concerning their nutritional value based on their ads.

Third, how is alpha account status not like an unlimited trial? In fact, that might very well be the most useful way to explain it to a potential new player.

The old Trial System in Eve
Restricted Skills
Restricted Items
Expires in 2-3 weeks

Alpha Accounts
Restricted Skills
Restricted Items
Restricted Content (more recent restriction that was implemented thanks to botters)
Doesn’t Expire

Fourth, I’m not sure how cognitive dissonance or cognitive dissonance reduction plays into this. You’ll have to break that one down for me Barney style.

In fact the opposite is true.

It reads like he’s trying to “speak for the little guy”.

I don’t even know why you two bother arguing about this. Alpha aren’t like limited trials. They can be used like an unlimited trial account, but that’s as close as it gets to a trial account. Look at it from an in-game perspective: CONCORD loosened up the requirements for capsuleers to fly in space. They allow people without valid Pilot’s License to fly around anyway, with restrictions.

The worst result is people playing as Alpha forever, which is still a win for the game.
The mean result is people occasionally subscribing one way or another, which is also a win for the game.
The best case result is people actually staying subscribed for a prolonged period of time.

It’s not a trial
… it’s second-class citizenship … (citizenry? is that a word?)
… which, considering the game itself, makes far more sense.

Well, you’re not objectively wrong, but second class citizen puts a bit of a negative spin on it. I mean, unlimited free trial sounds great; second class citizen sounds terrible. So, I’m certainly not going to describe it as such to potential new players.

And yes, I do think alphas are win for the game (and a win for players as well).

Yeah I’m not running around calling them that either …
… but the people in “1984” wouldn’t do it just as much.

If you want to consider “spin”, then consider the implications of calling it a “Trial”.

Do you want Alphas to feel like they’re a part of it …
… or do you want Alphas to feel detached due to them just “trying out” the game?

That’s another part of why an Alpha is more like a second class citizens compared to a trial account.

I’m not sure I get the message through properly.

Or what the point is anyway.
Hey, sorry for interjecting, but are you/will you bedoing the 2v2v2v2 stuff?

Let us leave it, as, semantics aside, we are in agreement - alphas are restricted, but probably good for the game overall.

Whilst I was not accusing you of so doing, people do frequently denigrate alphas on these fora, and the argument is usually that they are trial or demo accounts only, and unless they pay, their opinions are worthless. (These same arguments often come from individuals who also claim that their decision to “pay” for their Omega accounts with ISK is doing CCP a favour, when in fact the people doing CCP a favour are those who buy plex to sell for ISK out of desperation to advance more quickly. They never spend a real life penny on the game, but their opinions are golden compared with the trash opinions of alphas who never spend a real life penny on the game…)

I would not say that I was standing up for the little guy, more that I get irritated when I see others (again, not you) making arguments based on a model that CCP has self-evidently abandoned some years ago.

This idea has taken new meaning since the new Yoiul event started. One of the challenges is to mine ice, and you can’t do that in any alpha ships I know of except the Praxis, not to mention ice mining equipment is all omega, and since you can’t put mining lasers on a Praxis, you would need an ice drone. BTW the Praxis only works because you can fit one unit of ice in the cargo and because it can handle the drone.

But even if they made ice equipment available to alphas the Praxis won’t fit into the gate they put up in front of the ice sites (eye roll).

Long story short alphas just got barred from a basic part of the event. And if their chosen profession was mining I cannot see not even being able to start as doing anything but annoying them rather than inducing them to go omega. CCP might guess differently however.

People on the fora denigrate any way of playing that is not theirs. That’s called being a troll, insulting, and the issue is that the moderation allows them to do so while it is specifically forbidden.

Does not mean that what they wrote is any interesting, worth considering, in any form of shame. Their value judgement only apply to themselves so you can just report them and ignore them, since they are not here to discuss but to troll the forum users.

Still it’s a good thing to remind people that alphas are a viable way of playing now.

example of insulting troll that should get banned from the forum for personal attack, but won’t :

Note the usage of “sounds like”, “you should” which denotes the will to force one’s judgement on other people without any respect for them.

No I’m busy working on my next video (and my brother bought me cyberpunk, so I’ve been playing that a little bit).

Speaking of which, let me find a more appropriate thread…

Okay, never mind. I can’t seem to find your threads to your videos.

Anyway, I know your profile says you wont talk and won’t show your face. I think not showing your face is fine, but not doing any talking is going to hurt you a lot. Now, you don’t have to fill every moment with mouth noises, but doing things like explaining what you’re doing and what is going on, would really improve your content, and help audience members to connect with you as a person. Oh, and since Pochven is new, there are probably a lot of people that are curious about what it is and how it works.

Your post is unintentionally insulting.
You mean well, but your post implies things which aren’t true and exposes that you do not actually know me.

Like, for example, that I give a crap about the audience.

Holy ■■■■, I don’t. That’s what the other streamers are there for.

You reminded me that I need to set the channel to adult.

Thanks!

That’s not insulting, that’s what streams are for. If you did not care about audience, you would not stream.

The only insult is from your own part, when you claim you are too stupid to understand what streams are for.

Well, I don’t mean to be insulting. And I should probably stop here, but…

In completely unrelated news, I have done things like put little effort into my narration, not promoted videos, used intentionally worthless hashtags on twitter, and told people to support all their favorite content creators instead of telling them how to support me. And I think I do stuff like that so I don’t have to feel bad when my videos don’t do well. I mean, whatever, I wasn’t even trying.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go pour a billion hours into my next video, which I totally don’t care about.

I’m sorry for unintentionally insulting you. Didn’t even know you had a channel.
If you like what you’re doing then keep doing it?

The biggest extents I’ve went to accomodate the audience** was addressing them directly a few times, as character (unbeknownst to them), and the fact that i start and end my streams with the black screen caused by undocking/docking.

**(one of my highlights had 160+ views for a naming reason, but apparently it’s gone now because they don’t last )

Why the sarcasm?

Okay so you have a youtube channel. It’s not really comparable to me streaming ingame ■■■■?

Are your viewing numbers (i’m sure there’s a technical term for that) any good?

PS: Great voice!
