Eve Online is the greatest video game ever created. I’ve been playing since 2006 when I was like 12 years old. There is no other game in existence with the same level of depth and complexity, player interaction and strategy that is found within this game.
With that said, no king rules forever, and I can see the corporatization of Eve is starting to show. What started off as a unique and epic dark noir space opera with its own lore and style has slowly become more and more generic as the years pass by.
I have the utmost respect for the people who created the original Eve. But when I see new games coming out with names like “Frontier” and “Vanguard” my brain just thinks “generic corporate slop”.
Eve = a beautiful, unique, biblical and ominous name. Frontier and Vanguard are not unique or interesting names in any way.
Dust 514 = another cool name for a science fiction game. And I would be kicking myself every day if I fumbled a game like that. It actually boggles my mind a little bit that Dust was never on PC. Like what? Especially a game from the people who made Eve. Kind of insane to me.
Even Valkyrie, in my opinion, was a way cooler concept than Frontier.
I am biased because I really don’t care for survival games.
But even Eve itself is becoming more generic as time goes on. Ships used to be unique and interesting, even if someone of them were less good than others.
I miss the days when you had some Amarr ships with only one mid slot like the Coercer - sure it was gimped in some ways, but it made the ship interesting. You had to choose if you were going to fit a MWD or some kind of ewar. It was interesting and unique.
Now everything is the same.
It’s not all bad of course. Lots of the new navy ships are pretty cool.
But I miss some of the old asymmetry. Everything is becoming too perfect. Too optimized. Nothing is weird or stupid any more.
