Need help understanding fittings styles

I just started a new Gallente combat focused alt. From what I understand armor is the thing for their ships. My other alts are Caldari which I feel I have a well enough understanding for fitting ships, shield extender, EM and Thermal Resistance Rigs to protect shield then slap on some hybrid turrets. Started with the Incursus on my new alt. Current fit:

[Incursus, Danger Potato Fit I]
Small Ancillary Armor Repairer
Damage Control I
Type-D Restrained Nanofiber Structure
200mm Rolled Tungsten Compact Plates

1MN Y-S8 Compact Afterburner
Warp Scrambler I
Small F-RX Compact Capacitor Booster

Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I
Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I
Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I

Hornet I x1

Cap Booster 100 x3
Cap Booster 150 x5
Nanite Repair Paste x28
Antimatter Charge S x2180

I pieced this together from looking at post from over the years. At first I thought I understood the cap booster but went to test out the fit against some Serpantis and had everything going pretty much and never needed it (Also I don’t understand the charges). I haven’t fit any rigs because A I have 0 power grid left (still researching some skills) and the armor ones need moh power and B I don’t know what else to put that makes sense. I wanted to atleast but something for the EM Resistance but I keep seeing don’t mix armor and shields after my last battle with the Serpentis Baron I wanted to remove the cap booster and put a shield extender but “don’t mix armor and shields.” I also saw shields increase your bubble or something which to I still feel is worth it if I’m just getting up close and personal and shanking everyone. The Baron barely touched my shield (Cause he put on a few pounds) and well obviously armor doesn’t recharge like shields and the nanite paste is going to rack up a bill after awhile.

I went with Gallente because I heard they had high DPS (I also didn’t want a full Caldari line) and the drones are pretty helpful. I am currently waiting to be accepted into Eve U. I anyone could help me understand or point me in the right direction in the mean time I would appreciate it.

stay cheap, buy t1 it fits better. stockpile resources and never leave anything on the field. learn indy first. build ur own t1 stuff. then learn to fit ships as fittings change, ships and modeles get re-balanced, new fits develop counter-fits < ha counterfeit. and always prepare to be dogpiled, pvp in eve today is not much of a solo event, especially for a noob so fly the doctrin, support your role, and remember the whale sounds as a warning when you undock. “I am a big juicey yummy whale in a cage of sharks”

Moldy Potato Pilot!!!

:squinting_face_with_tongue:

First thing to keep in mind is that not all moldy potatoes are armor tanked, they’re rougly split armor and shield.

If you open the fitting window, you’ll find the Incursus has 3 Community Fittings. One of them is perfect for the AIR mission track, and the other two are labeled PvP and PvE. These are great starting points for you, they cheap and easy to fly. Once you get comfortable with them, you can start looking into tweaking those fits.

To fix your fitting issues, you should train CPU Management and Power Grid Management to 4 ASAP, and to 5 as soon as you get a solid income stream. Those two are the only support skills I’d say you want to 5 as quickly as you can get them there, because they make fitting your ships much easier. I leave it up to you if you want to spend daily reward SP on them, they worth it in my opinion, but that’s just my opinion.

I’ll reinforce this, don’t mix armor and shields. If you shield tank, armor is an extra layer of HP to get you out safely when your tank fails, and if you armor tank, shields are an extra layer to absorb damage while your tank comes online. If you hull tank, you laugh insanely and keep firing as alarms blare in the background when the other two bars disappear.
