I just saw a thread about the EU considering banning use of ingame currencies that you can purchase with real cash. wonder how it will affect Eve Online?
Iceland isnāt part of the EU. It also wouldnāt affect players in other countries outside of the EU.
Nothing like stating the obviousā¦The EU has 27 countries in it, all of which will probably have some Eve Online players. There, i did it too
Well then, I guess those players days of buying PLEX and skill injectors for cash are numberedā¦
Given that CCP bases all of their prices on the USD, Iād wager that half or more of EVE players reside in the United States and is where they receive most of their income.
Anyway, nothing that a VPN canāt fixā¦
but CCP is governed to follow any rules the EU makes. its been hashed out in that thread about it. because customers are in EU, CCP is obligated to follow the ruling.
For players living in the EU, sure. If they applied that ruling to all players, especially those in the United States, they might as well shut down the server.
last i recall, the ruling was that anything that is purchased using real money like PLEX, they must show the equivalent of RL money to PLEX.
Yeah thereās already a long thread about it. Basically they have to dumb it down for people who are bad at math or canāt control their spending habitsā¦
BAhahahahaā¦
@Paloma_Starlight Impact of European Commission Crackdown on Virtual Currency in EVE Online? - #8 by Gerard_Amatin
that is a breakdown of what the EU law is basically saying.
Itās not about customers being dumb at math. Itās companies playing deceptive games with customers to trick them into buying more or anything at all because they were led to believe something is cheap. Like those plex packages with the free additional plex for which no one has ever seen an offer without the discount, or the āmacrotransactionā instead of microtransaction prices for clothing or skins where you have to do several currency and price amount conversions to get to a RL money equivalent.
From my understanding eve would have somewhat of a loophole. What people are buying is game time, not in game currency. People just happen to choose to sell that game time for in game currency. They are not required to sell it for currency itās just an option.
PLEX is not game time, but a āpremium currencyā that can be traded for game time, other services, ISK currency, cosmetic items, and all in-game commodities (via contracts), etc.
Therefore, anything that can be traded for PLEX might have to display its equivalent price in euros ⬠alongside PLEX cost. As I understand, at least when the purchase is made using PLEX.
For example, a contract paid in PLEX would have to display:
100 PLEX / 4.99ā¬
But this might only apply to other cash shop items in New Eden Store, not items sold by other players, so Iām not really sure on this.
My comment about EU Totalitarianism was reported and hidden. I regret posting that.
Doesnāt make it any less trueā¦
āMy comment about EU Consumer Protection was reported and hidden.ā Here, fixed it for you.
The EU regulations discussed in this thread are concerned with addressing bad practices by video game companies that intentionally obscure the real āendā price of digital purchases.
- Practices obscuring the cost of in-game digital content and services
should be avoided- Practices that force consumers to purchase unwanted in-game virtual
currency should be avoided- Consumersā right of withdrawal should be respected
- Contractual terms should be fair and written in plain and clear language
- Game design and gameplay should be respectful of different consumer vulnerabilities
Horrible, isnāt it?
Ok. They are not banning it. They are regulating it. https://commission.europa.eu/document/download/8af13e88-6540-436c-b137-9853e7fe866a_en?filename=Key%20principles%20on%20in-game%20virtual%20currencies.pdf
