Newb starting Missions and requiring help!

That’s fair enough - sorting through the loot and any salvage is a tedious job. I’ve got hangars full of junk waiting for me to do something with. I tend to loot and salvage when I can because it’s tidy.
(and there’s nothing wrong with that!)

You can fit up a second destroyer specialized in wreck reclamation… Turret destroyers can fit multiple tractor beams and salvage beams along with a propulsion system and some capacitor management gear to keep it all running near constantly. And as Alpha clone state players cannot use salvaging drones or the Noctis its the fastest option for them. Heck the Noctis was made because of players using destroyers that way!

You’d actually make far more in salable goods than the mission pays in most L2 and L3 security missions via salvage. Especially when you get things like meta 4 guns or meta hictor bubbles. Those can easily be worth over a million isk each.

Just be careful if you attempt using a mobile tractor unit (MTU) to speed things up because depending on where you are you can end up with people shooting it looking to start a fight.

I am in a system one jump away from Perimeter, it looks quite active there, so it might also mean more pirates interested in a fight against someone like me…

I’d need to get some training into salvaging to not loose to much time there. But about the Meta modules that can sometime drops from ennemies, are they present directly in the wreck or do I need to salvage it to get those modules ?

Thanks !

Look at the wreck in the overview. A wreck with loot has a blob in the middle of it. If they are not available in the overview, then try another tab or add it in.
Approach the wreck and when within 2,500m open it the same way you open a container.
Unless you have a salvager fitted, don’t bother with the empty wrecks.

You’ll learn situational awareness in time. Ganking of a low level mission runner is rare - they loose their ship and don’t make a profit from your wreck.

Now, if you are 2bn of specialist level 4 mission running ship with a cargo of loot and salvage you’ll want to be a little more aware of threats.

Thanks again, you are really helping me out like everyone else on this thread =)

So, with everyone advices I managed to upgrade my guns to the Prototype variant and my Cormorant is doing way better in L2 now. I don’t even think I’ll need a Moa for those ^^

If I do remember well, L3 are designed for battlecruisers, L4 for battleships and L5 for fleets/capitals/blingy Marauders ?

When I’ll have more ISK, a Ferox should be a logical step up for L3s then ^^

Those who God wishes to destroy…

I ran a few Level 2 missions this afternoon in my T1 fitted shield Cormorant and they went alright - just keep moving and keep at range. I’m glad it’s working for you. You’ve got the right attitude.

A Ferox handles level 3 missions well. The Moa can do a lot of them, but it’s a tough ask of it. I like my Ferox - it’s a good aggressive lump of ugly.

Level 4 is the realm of well fitted Battleships and Marauders. Level 5 needs a fleet.

Or a gila.

Twice the price of a battleship.
And a missile/drone fit.

Still it’s a valid option in life, as is hammering F1 in a null fleet - there is more to Eve than “Gila” as an answer to any questions about missions.
Even if the question is “what is a good Caldari Hybrid turret ship for missions?”.

I know, but it’s still my favourite ship, though I used it for DED hunting. What would be the equivalent pirate ship for hybrids? Never really looked for that as I’m a drone bunny.

Direct pirate cruiser representative is the Vigilant. You see the Vindicator used in incursions here and there, but the Vigilant is mostly seen in PvP rather than missions.

Most of the guys running turret ships in higher level PvE are either in a T3C, HAC, or some flavor of projectile turret ship… Thus the Hurricane, Maelstrom, and Machariel because of selective damage type via ammo. The ones still running turrets in the other lineups are usually extreme range snipers or also using drones/sentries. Like the rail fits with sentries on the Dominix that uses a jump drive to maintain range.

About that, how are HAC for PVE Missions ? What level of mission can those ships run ?

And what about T3 Cruisers ? I heard Tengu was quite popular in the PVE meta, but since the ship is almost always played without the hybrid gun subsystem, it’s not really interesting for me, and I’ll need to train a lot in Missiles skills =/

HACs, and I often fly a Dual Rep HAM Sacrilege (a missile ship), easily manage Level 3 missions, for Level 4 I use an Apocalypse. The Apoc’s bonuses to range mean a Mega Pulse Laser fit can be highly effective. I’ve not tried the Sacrilege in a Level 4 mission - but I can see why it would work; speed (reduced signature MWD) to mitigate the damage,

I can fly a Legion - but don’t because don’t have a specific need that justifies the cost - the specialist cruisers are more effect in their niche.

CCP have a nice diagram on this. As always, bigger isn’t better in a given task. For example, e-war ships: the frigates are often at least as capable as the e-war cruisers and a lot cheaper.
Battlecruisers are the oddity really - they get viewed as a heavier cruiser or a light battleship where as they should really be treated as a light fleet command ship - it can stand off and support/co-ordinate a fight. Though in missions you’ll use it as a slower heavier version of a cruiser.
There isn’t a progression in size really, but threads of capability and specialisation - I can fly Amarr battleships at Level V, but I’ll probably never fly an Armageddon as my drone skills aren’t up to it. If I’m asked to bring e-war to a fight, then I’ll bring a Crucifier (frigate) and sit at 100km shutting down targets.

Worth remembering that T2 ships are Omega only and are a significant skill training commitment. And expensive, typically twenty times the cost of their T1 brethren.

Certain HACs can work in L4s. The ishtar can definitely do L4s for people who want to use drones, for example. The deimos (gallente hybrid turret HAC) can probably also do it, but it is tailored to blasters so would be challenging to try. It’s probably fun as a ship to always pay attention with and test your skills. If would expect the eagle (Caldari hybrid HAC aimed for railguns) would likely do fine in L4s as it has quite a sniper potential with the double optimal range bonus, although damage might be lacking.

However, the easiest way to run L4s is definitely in a battleship. HACs, T3Cs and pirate cruisers are for people who want more challenge while doing it (especially having to pilot manually), but they will probably not get more damage or better completion time than a properly fit BS.

So, I actually used my Cormorant a lot and I loved it. Today, I received a special mission, a “Storyline - Security” mission for the Hyasyoda corporation (the one I only did missions for). It actually went quite easily and when I looked at my Interactions screen on my Character Sheet, I noticed I had a massive buff in standings toward the Hyasyoda corporation.

I do know how Storyline missions work and the special rewards they can offer, but that boost allowed me the access to Level 3 mission for the Hyasyoda corporation, which won’t be completable with my Cormorant. I do know that Ferox is now the ship I should aim for in order to meet the requierements for L3s, but I would like to ask some questions :

  • Does L3 Missions differ from L2s to the point it need an entire new strategy ? Generally, in my Cormorant, I either load Lead ammo and orbit at 29km for the biggest rat in the room or a Large Collidable while shooting the others NPCs, but will it work with something as large and clumsy as a battlecruiser ?

  • Support skills are an important part of skilling our characters, and I trained some levels in those to get better results with my small railguns. Should I directly train for battlecruiser and medium railguns or still wait a bit ? I’m fearing that my fitting or tanking skills will be really low for a battlecruiser and L3s. I actually discovered this website, if anyone want to take a look at said skills : Billy Sanchezo (EVE Skillboard).

Thanks for everything guys, it’s because of nice people like you I was able to go that far, even as a stinky alpha ^^
The bad reputation the community sometimes get still have to appear to my eyes ^^

The biggest thing is this community punishes those who refuse to learn and complain about it being unfair.

And with bigger ships it often makes far more sense to either orbit a collidable object at a moderate range or utilize keep at range depending on wether you are range tanking or traversal tanking.

Before making the jump to L3s you absolutely want to be able to utilize a T2 tank for the ship you plan on using. That means a probable T2 damage control, and definitely T2 resists modules and reps. You should also take a very serious look at capacitor management skills because that extends how long you can maintain said tank. Because Caldari vessels are almost universally shield tanked.

Also wouldn’t hurt to at least take the gunnery skills tab on the support skills to 3 at minimum for everything. I’d heavily suggest that 4th rank for tracking speed though, it helps with the larger slower guns.

Pick up some drone skills, you will be forced into utilizing light drones at minimum to clear frigates off you that you fail to blap before they set up orbit around you. Drones V, Light Drones IV, support skills to 3 shouldn’t take too long and will serve you well. As you are using a shield tank with Caldari you cannot easily afford to keep a web around to make them easier to hit without compromising your tank in some way.

One thing to point out here is that Storyline Missions use derived standing. So, while you got a bump in several standings, look again and you’ll see that you took a hit in several others. You may be aware of that, but just wanted to point it out in case you weren’t. Storylines are great at times, but be careful not to run too many of them for one side as it can do some serious damage to your standings with some groups.

The short answer is not really, the long answer is yes, because you will be facing more difficult NPCs and more of them. That means that you need to manage targets more carefully, deal with managing aggro, and generally be sharper as you fly. One thing that you should absolutely be doing is looking these up on EVE Survival first so you know what you’re going up against.

https://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=MissionReports

Generally one thing that you’re going to want to do is change how you prioritize enemies. Frigates will now start to web you, so I generally move from small to large targets as I clear the field.

This. You will be happy to have this when the frigates “get under your guns”, and especially as you get into L4s.

Also this.

To be clear, there are plenty of people who just enjoy being combative, immature, or jerks (take a look in General Discussion here to see some of that going down), but there are a lot of us who really enjoy helping people and you definitely get a better reception with an attitude, approach, and willingness to learn like you have shown here. EVE needs more people like you playing

The main difference between Level 2 and Level 3 is that you need a higher damage rate and the ability to manage greater incoming fire.
A Destroyer will find doing this very challenging - though you have a reasonable approach to damage mitigation already.

At level 3 you are looking at medium weapons, both to do the increased damage needed to break active tanks on some of the NPCs (do damage faster than they can repair) and to maintain any range advantage.

You will be taking more incoming fire, often from ships with better range than level 2. You need a bit more buffer (amount of shield/armour) and a faster repair rate - more than a small shild booster gives you.

That need for a bigger booster and medium weapons drives the reason that Cruisers or Battlecruisers are recommended for these missions.

Target prioritisation becomes important. Blap the small stuff first before they close, get under your guns and start to apply e-war effects to you. That will be the key learning at this stage.

The comment about light drones to deal with frigates that get close under your guns is very important. A webifier works to help there as well.

Well done on handling the level 2 missions in a Destroyer - that’s a fair achievement that you can be pleased with.

you can also take a closer look at the gnosis.

Gnosis does not really interest me

is there a reason why?
