Noob question: what the point with the MWDs in PvE?

I understand what you’re saying. But I’d like to see some numbers on it. It will begin to mitigate damage at super high speeds. I just would like to know what those speeds are. I mean… would a Dreadnought be able to track a cruiser orbiting at 4,000 m/s with perfect angular momentum at a range of 10 kilometers? Or would the Dreadnought get the full damage of its weapons due to the target having an active MWD?

My question is would an MWD cause perfect accuracy in all scenarios? Is the penalty actually that bad? Some ships can reach 14km/s with an MWD. Would that also be considered an absolute stationary target due to the MWD?

You’re speaking in absolutes. An MWD will never ever mitigate damage. Ever. Under any circumstance.

I don’t believe it. I don’t think absolutes exist in this game.

If it sounded like I was speaking in absolutes: that was not my intention.

The only thing I wanted to do is correct your statement ‘that a MWD makes it harder for enemies to track you.’

The speed makes it harder, the sig increase makes it easier. In general a MWD is not a good way to make enemies track you less, an AB does the job better.

Then don’t.

The signature bloom takes away all benefits of the increased speed if it is equally large as the speed modifier. You only get an advantage when using high-tier equipment where the speed modifier outpaces the signature bloom and/or if your ship has a bonus on MWDs signature penalty.

It would overall depend on your needs at the time. Trying to anticipate what kind of mess you’ll get into in the future is maddening. Afterburners reduce acceleration and maneuverability while MWDs increase the signature.

A standard MWD will increase your signature by 500%, but a more expensive one will lower that amount to 350% while providing a greater burst of speed. Also, you don’t have to leave it running- you can give yourself a quick burst and turn it off again.

Afterburners increase mass which slows you down. It’s for orbiting your target at close range, but not really for escape.

For escape, you want either an MJD or MWD.

FYI microwarp drives add the same mass to your ship as afterburners of that size do.

This isn’t an afterburner downside, it’s a general propmod downside.

Every single person who flies tackle in this game will disagree with you.

Tracking speed is a thing, you know. Explosion velocity is a thing, you know, you can literally outrun the explosions of missiles if you’re fast enough, and guess how you get that kind of speed.

You… took everything I said in that sentence out of context and ignored all I said before ANNNND after.

I am pro MWD in both PvE and PvP. I never fit afterburners because I don’t like them.

I’m pro MWD and AB. I fit the one that suits the situation best.

Well, I like to rush right into the thick of it in the biggest ship I can, stop my engines, turn on my MWD, and then see if I can fight my way out before my capacitor runs dry!

Typically, what I’ve found running lvl 4’s is this, (mission dependent), MW mod for brawler (close range), and AB for a ship that has more range 100 km or more.

Depends on how far mission spawns are from warp in, and how good your skills are to tank warp gate rats up in your grill upon warp in, some immediately web and scram you and if you can’t tank it, a MW will give you the ability to distance.

AB if you can tank because you can use the the cool down too recharge and give your capacitor time to fill up as you slow boat to the next warp gate and salvage at the same time.

My dude. 3,000m/s in an MWD Frigate that’s allegedly fit for speed is just PAINFULLY slow. Heck, I do over 2,500m/s running the afterburner on a dual-prop Dramiel.

Try a 50MN Punisher for burning tactical bookmarks.

I have been so informed. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: It was fast for me when the majority of the time 600 was the max I could get. I shall be upgradingshortly :slightly_smiling_face:

A few months ago, they nerfed strategic cruiser speed. Apparently, they were flying too fast. CCP caught wind and fixed that in a hurry. Nothing I can do about it. Unless you know of a way to bypass that nerf and get them fast again despite CCP’s wishes. I’d like to hear all about it. I went from 10 AU/s down to 6 and then fit it for speed to get myself back up there. I mean… I’d like to go to the CCP headquarters with a few boxes of donuts, find a vacant PC terminal while everyone is helping themselves, and undo the nerf, but I doubt that operation would succeed.

It’s not about going the fastest. I know I could hop into a frigate if I wanted to. I do know that. It’s about getting the ships that I want to fly up to a tolerable speed. For combat, that’s usually a Proteus or a Vindicator.

that would be your Warp Speed, not your on-grid with an MWD running.
i’m confused.

You’re right- sorry- I’m busy and very distracted.

It’s probably been mentioned before, but the fitting requirements of MWD mods are huge compared to AB mods… So unless you’re going for a speed tank, fitting a MWD mod for PvE will usually severely limit your ability to fit a proper tank with enough DPS to quickly mitigate the incoming DPS from NPC’s…

That completely depends on the ship. For Marauders in L4 missions, the combination of MWD + MJD is a quasi-standard to run efficiently.

The main difference is that an AB is mostly active permanently while an MWD is pulsed to quickly reposition if nessessary.

Other than battleships I always use MWD. Long distance acceleration gates, long distance rats on lowsec belts, looting…

Can’t imagine doing PVE with afterburner.

But if you are just flying around anomalies with stormbringer, zap it all and leave the loot there then sure you might think that MWD is useless. But that would be an opinion based on your content-bubble.

I don’t know, I do pretty good with a maelstrom or a tempest auto cannon fit.

T2 fit, you don’t need faction or officer mods at all, the tempest I use polarized fit so no resistance but it kills so fast I don’t need to constantly boost, and a heavy cap, 3200, if I do need to run down rats who try to range me.

That is a Jump drive not a warp drive.
