I am assuming this is due to some projected impact on the in game economy but when they released that the Alpha clone status was getting an increase on the number of available ships i was very excited. However on login I found that the one area of the game I actually enjoyed the most, the ore gathering, refining, etc, did not see the same love. Still limited to the one ship from Ore.
Was there any reason for this limitation that I might have missed?
To prevent fleets of alpha accounts strip mining the world bare and to ensure CCP gets some omega accounts.
That said… Go look at the Rokh. BS tank, 8 turret slots for mining lasers… Use miss for tank. Lows for cargo expanders and mining upgrades. It will beat a venture if done right.
Alphas will get mining barges by the end of 2018, and for those who whine about alphas stripping the world bare… I forgot the exact number but something lik 95% of all the ore mined In EVE currently comes from null anyway. And I’d be surprised if most of that wasn’t from the same alliance.
Thanks for the info Gaslight. I found the alpha clone status to be to short and limited to judge how deep I want to get involved as I maxed out really quick.
Going to give Lady’s input a whirl and see if I can delve deeper into this and get hooked while waiting for future changes.
Ok I should point out that any changes to barges in 2018 is more of an educated guess than solid fact. CCP will surely continue to ease alpha restrictions as EVEs business model shifts however. On a side note mining is very boring and one of the slower ways to make isk.
To be honest, I’d prefer CCP to have given Alphas barges than battleships. Over production of minerals through mining is not as harmful to the economy as overproduction of ISK through bounties. Minerals are self limiting - produce too many, the price tanks and people move to a different occupation.
Isk is not produced by battleships in any large extent. Its produced by carriers. And to a lesser extent vni.
Ore split can be summed from the mer for the earlier poster… But alpha clones are not limited to high sec.
Battleship mining goes way back before ORE ships were a thing. The reason the Rokh is king here is because of the initial CPU offered. Here is an fully skilled Alpha fit:

It produces 12.3 cubes per second. This fit demands the first 4 lasers activated followed by the second 4 half a cycle later. Reason? Your hold is too small. Have a secure container beside you to transfer ore into after each mining cycle. Or, have a hauler of some type available to pick up the ore.
Can’t wait for all the alpha mining BS. Then again you didn’t really see many Gnosis mining before either and they mine more than a Venture too I think I heard.
Enough that you could whelp a venture fit for WH huffing/mining every single day for two weeks solid. Or the ability to whelp 2-3 FW defensive plexing throw-away ventures each day for FIVE MONTHS.
Or you can make one single negative tanked mining Rokh and throw a party where everyone is invited to bring a gank cata or two from within the closest five systems to pad their kill mails with a shiny.
Personally by the time you’ve sunk that much into a hull you may as well throw another 300m or more in modules into the mix as well and have a solidly built L4/L5 runner or incursion ship so that you can just perform some gun mining to fill that wallet faster than mining ever would. And you can use that ISK to buy the minerals for your needs. Still subject to the possibility of getting ganked… but you might actually have a “fighting” chance if not stupid.
You “can’t” gank a mining BS, but you don’t have to. Just take all the jetcans with the ore. BS fights back: kill it ever so slowly, it doesn’t: you still get the ore.
Seriously people, BS mining is not a thing unless you have an alt in an industrial on hand, and Alphas won’t.
LOL go ahead and think mining BSs are ungankable. You don’t see many mining BS kills because you don’t see many mining BSs. Take a look at CODE’s KB and you’ll see a few. It really doesn’t take many Cats to kill a poorly tanked BS.
This Apoc didn’t even have cargo expanders and it only took 5 Cats. Granted, he didn’t tank the mid slots, but he didn’t anti tank the lows or rigs, either.
One thought on that fit… Don’t mining upgrades stack? In the least I would drop one for a DCU just to bump up the tank a hair. That should also be less CPU than a mining upgrade.
Cargo expanders… You could opt for 2 mining upgrades, 2 expanders, and the DCU just to make life a hair less stressful on constantly emptying your hold.
