The stakes are real and are measured in time and effort. People spend real time on the game and away from other things they could do in real life and they also invest real effort in achieving their in-game goals, whuch in many cases is just buying the ship they want, fitting it and having fun flying it. And when a ganker abusing game mechanics comes by and destroys that ship that took so much time to build and skill train into, believe me, the hurt is real

Excuse me but, they put themselves in that hurt.
Nobody forced them to spend billions to go mine and do it badly, nobody forced them to make their lives a game and a game their lives by measuring isk vs minutes… Their priorities of Time and Effort were valued by themselves in response to a game.
Now tell me again how that would be anyone’s fault if one jumped into a combat ship and blew them up to smithereens?
