Hello everyone.
I’m a returning player with a main of roughly 40m SP after several years.
Man, things have changed a lot since the old times. I basically have to re-learn everything from scratch.
I’ve always been a Caldari solo player combat focused, but now I got bored, and I want to create a couple of alts on my single account focusing them on Mining, Industry and PI.
My main will remain as combat mission runner, abyss and exploration.
My questions:
Any advice on where to position those alts?
Should I have one for each major trade hub (1 in Jita, 1 in Amarr, 1 in Dodixie) and then haul resources around , or should I stuff them all in Jita?
But if I stuff everything in Jita, isn’t too dangerous to doing mining/PI in that area?
Should my alts be all Caldari/Amarr (since it seems they are friends in Faction Warfare) and avoid Gallente in order not to incurr in faction-standing issues? Or it doesn’t matter?
What I personally do is have all my characters do PI in a single system.
That system in my case is not too many jumps out from my alliance’s home system, so I can also use the alts for combat or mining or whatever happens in that area.
One alt is my hauler for the trips to other parts of space like Jita.
As you are not part of an alliance and aren’t bound to any part of null sec space I can imagine you have a different situation, but you too could pick a nice quiet (or busy) system anywhere in space as your base from where you do faction warfare, missions or anything you like, and put your PI and alts in a good system nearby.
I don’t see the value of having alts in every trade hub unless you wish to trade for money. There are websites to check prices everywhere (like EVE Tycoon ) and if I need an item from any of those markets I’ll have my hauling character travel there.
For your main, you’d be smart to operate some distance (5-10 jumps) from any trade hub, particularly Jita.
Dodixie isn’t really a major trade hub, and Amarr is distant second to Jita. But between Jita and Amarr, you might find more opportunity in Amarr (lower volume, but better margins and less competition).
Yep. I wouldn’t recommend doing that.
Unless you’re actually participating in FW, it doesn’t matter. However, if you plan to run missions (particularly security missions) you need to keep derived standings in mind. For example, if you mission for Caldari, you’ll gain derived standings with Amarr and lose derived standings with Gallente and Minmatar. Unless you’re careful about only taking missions that involve shooting pirates, it’s easy to rack up hefty standings losses with the opposing factions. When you hit -5 with a faction, you become kill on sight to their faction police (which can make travel inconvenient).
Geography might be a bigger factor in where you choose to base, since there have been some significant changes in hisec trade routes since the Triglavian invasion. Amarr is now much farther from Jita (45 jumps, with a number of ganker choke points on the path). This has resulted in Caldari space being crowded, and Amarr space being much less populated. Personally, I like living in Amarr territory. It’s fairly quiet.
Many people use a “Jita alt”, that just sits in Jita 4-4. The idea is to buy the stuff you need elsewhere for Jita prices and ship it to where you need it for your main gameplay activity.
You can also create courier contracts to make other people do the hauling for you. (Join “Haulers Channel” in-game and read the pinned message to get a good idea of how to make a courier contract that will be accepted and run by other people)
As you can tell, a lot depends on what you plan to do in Eve Online. I know people like Gerard up there who likes to keep them all in on spot. For example; should you desire to mine wormholes, an alt or 2 in there with you, can be used as an anchor.
People who do a lot of hauling might want to spread them out over the main trade hubs. I did this with the 3 princesses. Jita ran to Dodixie, Amarr to Jita, Rens to Amarr, and Dodixie to Rens. A circle trade route, where I could always depend on one of them being close to the needed Region.
Sounds like you got your answer pretty early on in this thread. I just wanted to point it out for future readers, it will depend greatly on your goals and objectives.
Thank you very much everyone for these super-valuable advices.
Indeed, Jita is the biggest market, but it’s also a Ganking Festival. I’ve lost the count on how many time I was popped.
I think I’ll create two Amarr alts a move over there focusing in those systems. No problems with FW conflicts between characters, and a full array for PI/Industry/Mining.
I’ll evaluate later if i’ll move an Alt in Jita and do some hauling (maybe when it doesn’t require anymore 40+ jumps from Amarr)
