Rookie Griefing Policy was updated Monday

is he still active in Arnon?

I started making throwaway alpha thrashers and posing as a noob in local who needs help with the arc. After losing nearly a billion ISK in bling fit tristans, he moved to nullsec or something.

ARNON IS MYYYY HOUSE!

bling fit tristans. That’s him alright.

lol your house … reminds me of something.

Sorry for reviving an old topic, but I’d like some clarification from players, as the rules are not really ā€œruleyā€.

If a newer player invites you to duel, with a bet, should you say no?
If you find a newer player who is already suspect in a belt you should not shoot them?
If you find drones left in a belt, and scoop them, you must give them back when they ask?
If someone newer goes out of their way, slow boating 200km, to attack you because you are suspect you should not shoot them?
If a newer player in a player corp attacks you, you should not shoot them?
If a player in a big ship attacks me in a little ship I should let them win because they are in a bigger ship, and that’s what they expected?

When I try to avoid a fight by not fighting back and running away, I explode. My only protection seems to be blowing them up before they get me.

I don’t want to have a play style that is considered being a bully, that’s not why I’m in New Eden.

I am a thief, that’s how I make my Isk. That means I’m suspect a lot. If I have to let myself get blown up every time I’m trying to get my newly liberated goods into my station it’s not going to work, and I’ll have to do missions, or maybe even mine…

Thank you in advance.

The idea is that you are not supposed to use their lack of knowledge to trick them into situations that they would otherwise not have found themselves in, had you not come along and exploited that lack of knowledge.

The emphasis is on you making them do things that make them vulnerable.

Taking that as the rule, it would be fine if they invited you to a duel, if they are already a Suspect, if they lost their Drones, if they attacked you etc.

If you did not deliberately manipulate them into that situation, there’s no problem.

When you tell them that are you going to leave them a ā€˜gift’ in a container in space and helpfully explain how to disable that pesky green safety setting that is stopping them from taking their present, reassuring them all the time that it won’t cause them any problems at all, and then blow them up when they go suspect … then you are griefing them.

When you invite them to a duel and send them a message telling them it’s just a Fleet invite, please accept, it’ll be fun, honest, then you are griefing them.

Even then, afaik, this only counts as griefing if they are new and in a starter system.

If they are a 3 year vet outside Jita and they fall for one of those tricks, I think we can all agree they got what they deserved.

But what if you just happen to travel pass those systems with suspect status, like carrying stuffs? And how do you know they are legit newbies, not alts of experienced players? I know this is a rule that probably not strictly enforces but this sounds awkward.

It’s not griefing to simply shoot at a Suspect.

It’s griefing to deliberately manipulate a new player in a starter system into becoming a Suspect so that you can shoot at them.

Big difference.

Trust me, you can still blast noobs in those systems. Just be careful while in those systems not to shoot folks under 31 days old and don’t go after noobs specifically. Be an equal opportunity ganker and you’re fine.

I’ll shoot any suspect anywhere, 31 days under or not, starter system or not.

As far as I know, as long as them being Suspct / shootable has nothing to do with me, shooting them is absolutely fine.

Shooting someone in a spaceship game about shooting people is not griefing. Exploiting their lack of knowledge to get them into a situation where they become legally shootable is.

Camping a starter system with the specific intention of ganking players under 31 days old would probably be crossing the line though, agree there.

Oh this isn’t my opinion or personal code of honor or anything. This is just what has been communicated to me by GMs and is my best understanding of the current rules. If it were up to me, nowhere would be safe for anyone, ever. I feel you that it’s ridiculous.

I know that you can be reported and warned for suicide ganking a noob in one of those systems(I live in Arnon), not entirely sure about shooting a suspect noob, but would not at all be surprised if you got a warning for it, seeing as how all the GMs seem to have their own personal understanding of the very vague rules.

Stand on your principles, sister! Just don’t be surprised if you get an erroneous warning from a GM and have to contest it for WEEKS. I had to provide a screenshot of an ISD demonstrating that he also didn’t understand the rule before they finally apologized and retracted the official warning (that was a rare event, don’t count on that happeneing). The resulting rule change is what spawned this thread, actually. You’re welcome!

Best bet is to hedge your bets by asking for clarification in a petition.

Really. I have a hard time believing a veteran would be worried about being preyed on by newbs. Unless it’s a veteran specifically looking to somehow bully/grief/prey on newbs.

See above.

Oh boo-hoo. In mortal terror because the newbs are coming to get us. Get over it man.

How terrible! ā€œCan’t prey on newbs so it’s ruining the game for me, the walls are closing in, I’m losing sleep at night, blah blahā€¦ā€

I think most people haven’t lost much sleep over any of this, and they are doing just fine.
