How do they help? The description is very vague. Say a skill like Gallente Frigate 1. How is it better to have Gallente Frigate III? Does it give me a bonus somewhere that I can see?
I understand that having Gallente Frigate V is required for Assault Frigates (Enyo). But the description of the skill (Skill at operating Gallente Frigates) doesn’t tell me much.
Each ship has specific bonuses , the higher the level , the better it gets.
For example, Tristan is a gallente frigate with the following bonuses:
Gallente Frigate bonuses (per skill level):
7.5% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret tracking speed
10% bonus to Drone hitpoints and tracking speed
Having Gallente Frigate I trained will gain you:
7.5% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret tracking speed
10% bonus to Drone hitpoints and tracking speed
Having Gallente Frigate III trained will gain you:
22.5% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret tracking speed
30% bonus to Drone hitpoints and tracking speed
There are ships that get multiple bonuses , like t2 ships, those get bonuses from the t1 skill counter part and t2 skill counter part (like the Enyo that you mentioned) , strategic cruisers get their bonuses from subsystems skills and the racial one , faction pirate ships get bonuses from 2 specific racial skills.
Oriki provided an excellent answer. I’d just like to add one thing. Ship skills offer extremely powerful bonuses when compared to other skills. The tradeoff is that ship skills apply to much narrower range of ships than general support skills will.
For example, each rank of the Gallente Frigate skill will give the Tristan 1.5 ranks worth of motion prediction, 2 ranks worth of drone durability, and drone tracking speed, which has no dedicated skill that can improve it. Very powerful indeed. Unfortunately, the Gallente Frigate skill only applies to about 20 ships, while motion prediction applies to any ship that fits guns, and drone durability applies to any ship that fits drones.
Of course, you don’t want to neglect your general support skills either, as you’ll get a lot of mileage out of them, and their cumulative effect is still quite powerful. But, I wanted to make sure you knew just how powerful ship skills were.
And maybe to add to frigate size ships and their respective gunnery and support skills. 30-50 days of skilling (rough estimate, I don’t remember anymore) in said Gallente frigate with it’s respective support skills to level 5. Put you at the same level of using that ship compared to somebody that has played for 10 years. The only advantage that player might have over you is his ability and understanding how to use that ship. And that is a big maybe as most EVE players only PVP when they need to, told to, or forced to.
