How about… not spamming the button and scanning at longer intervals? IIRC there is a hard limit either way as you need to let the scanner cycle.

the additional server load such a thing would create is considerable.

No need for any automation. You can activate to control your mouse by keyboard in the accessibility functions.
Then you have the mousebuttons on the numpad and you won’t get tenosynovitis.

An additional option is to get a vertical mouse, reducing the strain.
