Free to play games are often riddled with bad faith, money grubbing marketing.
This is an absolute myth and something EVE online players and devs and execs tell themselves everyday to cope with the current state of affairs
What world do you live in? And how is a game that is often in the top 20 most active MMOs need âto cope with the current state of affairsâ?
Most of the games that are more popular and successful than EVE are subscription based with cosmetic stores. Games that are completely f2p, like Raid: Shadow Legends, Diablo Immortal, War Thunder, World of Tanks, Genshin Impact, etc are all predatory and spam you with Buy this! crap.

Hilmar has done massive damage to the game in recent years. Heâs entirely incompetent and surrounded by sycophants. Despite his best efforts, Eve has scraped by and survived.

For each of those games there are 10 or more that are free to play that does not do that
Rumor is that Hilmar read Cixin Liuâs Three Body Problem when it was first published and getting hype in the Sci Fi literature circles, and he was so inspired by the idea of the Trisolarians that he went back to work the next day and said âscrap everything, give me this book in Eve Onlineâ and then the Triglavian Invasions was born.
Thatâs how he stays sharp.
I dont even play anymore because or war eligibility/structure reqs and war hqs and refused to spend irl money on the game for years before. 99% of the players I knew quit because of game changes, not because they lost interest. The CEO is responsible for all in the end.

Donât worry you will come back to EVE. Not tomorrow or next year but you will return again. Noone quits EVE. They take breaks.

Eve is like everything else in the worldâŠrelying on those of us who do have the spare cash to pay for those who donât. All the âpay to winâ people, and those paying for multiple Omegas without the grind, are basically subsidising everyone elseâŠand all those âfreeâ or grindy accounts. People âPlexingâ their Omegas are not really adding anything to the CCP coffersâŠit is the people who buy the PLEX in the first place who are adding money. We are the ones CCP need to keep happyâŠand they know it.
My point is that the overall player base has been consistently shrinking over the last 13 years, despite the gaming industry as a whole growing significantly. So the current model clearly donât work? It was introduced in 2016 and it caused a big spike in players, but they all stopped playing again immediately. Why is that?
