The evil of Multiboxing

Which games would those be? I’ve played a lot of MMOs over the last 16 years, and it has never been against the rules to multibox in any of them…only automating inputs.

No thanks.

Much like you, Gadget also has her own subset of rules to overlay CCP’s. She cannot use anything that she didn’t make, buy with LP, or loot herself (with a few exceptions like BPO’s).

That’s the way I play her. What I don’t do is try to get everyone else to play this way.

inb4 “would have lived if it was a shield super” …three times in a row? :smirk:

Funny you should say that, because I’ve just finished building CONCORD Hexa 2500mm Repeating Cannons and CONCORD Capital Shield Boosters from BPCs I bought with CONCORD LPs. And I was going to build a Vindicator when I lost mine, but my BPC got ganked while I was trying to reach my Engenering Complex so I gave up on that.

Sounds like we folow some of the same rules, exept I believe it’s wrong to accept a way of life I myself wouldn’t want to live. For me that’s just a form of virtue signaling I find no value in.

EVE is game of alts multiboxers and bots. There are two things you can do about it.

Either you quit the game if this is something you are against. Or you join them and start multiboxing too.

Report the botters, though. That’s against the core rules.

According to Vokan here, resistance is futile. The way I see it the problem is not multiboxers or botters, but people who refrain from speaking out about when other people play this game in a way they don’t accept. Folowing the debate on botting, I read that CCP has done little or nothing to adress this problem the last 3+ years, and in the communities where this has been discovered, the majority has keept silent.

The way I see this being adressed is that some players have taken it upon themselves to conter the problem by hunting down botters and killing them.

I believe this sends a signal that CCP want the player base themselves to be more involved in “policing” the game.

Maybe what this game need is a few more carebears, and a little less “minding my own business” kind of players? I for one do not think griefers and gankers have what it take to change this game.

I disagree!

You seem like someone who would be surprised how much corps obsess over their Zkill “efficiency” rating.

When you buy power in any game, you “win” the feeling of power trip when you grind someone into dust, and to some people, that’s a seriously attractive prospect. It’s why RMT sites exist and make money, and why PvP/pay-to-win games make so much bank. It’s also why, eventually, the non-pay-to-win experience in a pay-to-win kind of game eventually becomes so bad you have problems keeping enough population in the game by giving it away for free. Being on the wrong end of that is of negative entertainment value.

As for this guy… if he realizes he’s having a bad time and will never be good enough to “win” anything, he’ll figure out pretty quickly that maybe there’s a reason null is so dead and hisec is so populated and maybe it’s not such a bad place to stay after all. Or maybe he actually will git gud and play predator for a change. Can’t PvP him if he quits trying.

Multiboxing always makes some of those who don’t use it feel bad, that’s true in any game. Barely a week goes by on that other game’s forums (the game people tell you to try if EVE isn’t your thing) without a thread on the evils of multiboxing, and in some cases it can be justified to complain. When a group of 20+ Deathknights (equals a fleet of armor-tanked drone battleships I guess?) wins an instanced PvP battleground by just spamming their AoE so no one can get the target point there’s only one guy having fun. That is pay-to-win over others, nothing else.

But there’s at least one totally legitimate reason to multibox IMO - you don’t have to rely on others for some tedious task. Quite a few PvE players will have an alt ready to bring in a salvage ship or hauler, right? And PvP guys might have a scout alt or a trader? Is that a game-breaking advantage or maybe a quality-of-life possibility for players?

As for the OPs situation I’d actually call the multiboxer rather fair. He didn’t agress with all three ships, he kept two in reserves. If he had lost while only reinforcing with one VNI the posters here would be calling him an idiot…

Well…if that is what he wants to do…okay.

No. You’ll just lose the dread.

Seriously, it isn’t bigger is better. Your problem is a sub-optimal strategy.

I don’t see how that is a legitimate reason to multibox? The one you might have to rely on could be a new player like me? You want to know why it’s so hard to find new players to play EVE that they have to give it away for free? It’s probably because all the tedious tasks that would have to rely on a player is being filled by alts, and the only task left to play for a new player is cannon fodder.

The statement pretty much sums up my experience as a solo player in EVE, because in the begining of my EVE experience as a miner I had to rely on others for on grid boosting, wich is why I don’t have the skills to fly an Orca today. Every single person I have meet who could fly an Orca however got the skill, not to benefit somebody else, but to boost his own alts.

I think it would be great if more people could see the value in having to rely on others, and understand that this is the legitimate reason NOT to multibox.

The guy who multiboxed me out of my wormhole experience said he found it strange that I didn’t have corp mates who came to assist me, but that’s the thing; I have to rely on others, and that’s sometimes hard to find as a solo player in EVE. A multiboxer don’t have to rely on anyone but himself and his alts.

I moved from high sec because the corp I was member of was put under siege by suicide gankers from CODE and P I R A T alliance. Most of my corp mates eventually quit the game as it became impossible to play without getting harrased by somebodys suicide ganking alt. Now I find myself thinking if I should move on to null sec or up the wormhole chain. The problem is that I don’t have an alt that can light my cyno in null and there’s no corps in wormhole space that need players they can rely on. Logi pilot anyone? Oh, you have an alt for that. I see…

As for the OP situation, I don’t agree that it was fair. He had two VNIs on grid, but only one agressed me. The second didn’t agress untill he realised he was loosing the fight, and the third was his backup off grid. That’s why I went back out the second time, I thought it was only one VNI left and the third VNI didn’t show up until I had the second in hull. I did go back out the third time trying to finish off the second VNI, and maybe tank the third untill I could focus on him. But it wouldn’t have made much difference because I suspect he was already standing by in a new ship with his first alt.

Or get some buddies…

No, using a strategy that is not working for you is futile.

Multibox is fine, as long as not botted.

I can see your point. But honestly, how long would you be willing to just hang around in case your new veteran friend needs help? An hour? Two? Three? He probably promised you some of the loot, and your skill queue is ticking, but it will get boring to just sit there and watch. He’s mining five hours a day and needs a hauler every ten? minutes - would anyone actually do that? Or sit in a combat ship ready to kill a few belt rats or the odd real player pirate (when the miner is likely to pick somewhat safe sites). Thing is, you would be exactly that - cannon fodder expected to sit tight until needed. An alt does that without complaining or getting bored (or demanding more cash). Plus it’s always available if you play on non-standard times, like for example me doing shift work.

And no, I only have one other account that I’m not even sure what to do with yet. Started it for the last Youle event.

This thing isn’t really a multiboxing problem, the multiboxing is just a symptom of something else. Some people want to be alone, but many others just find it hard to meet someone else who shares their interests and timetables. Not everyone wants to be a nameless cog in some huge alliance even if they’d like a few likeminded guys to hang out with.

I still think the guy played at least a lot more fair than he could have. Instead of 3vs1 he brought one reinforcment at a time, losing a ship and incurring repair costs on another.

I think I’ve already figured that out, I just don’t know where I should carry on from here. The thing I like about marauders and dreadnoughts is that they can siege and tank longer to survive against multiple enemies. But no, I don’t think that will work.

My experience so far has been that playing a solo character in EVE will alway be a sub-optimal strategy, I’m just supprised that so many see multiboxing as a legitimate strategy to not having to rely on others. I just don’t see it that way, because I choose not to multibox I have to rely on others.

It’s the paradox in EVE; you don’t need super capitals or dreads to win in eve, all sucess has already been claimed by players who came before you, and all that’s left to do is to “get rekt”. That is why CCP can no longer ask people to pay to play EVE, to do so would probably constitute fraud as the promised experience is no longer obtainable by any means. And I’m not joking, this is also why null is almost empty, and you can buy a Titan for less than 70 bill. It’s obsurd to think that this ship would cost you 130 bill just a few years ago, but it has lost it’s value as it no longer constitute any real power. This is also why one of the corps I know who occupy space in null chose to recently give away 350 bill to it’s player base. The CEO of that corp told me the reason was that he could no longer find players who wanted to fly supers in null, and his two Titans has no longer any value withouth a fleet.

Pls read all your Posts in one year again…and you will laugh a lot.

Botting is a problem, not multiboxing. you will beat everbody doing trippleboxing with two singelplayed Chars when doing it right. IN WH Space you always have to play with 2 or more accounts, otherwise you will loose a lot. You life in a hole with 10 friends but everybody is multiboxing. Maybe a Scout at a hole, a miner in the belt while hunting a Nestor in the chain. And maybe a backup Logi for finishing that Nestor without loosing your own smaller ship.

And if you think that null is empty than maybe you should log in to tq not sissi…Null is the most preferred space from ccp.

Change your freaking strategy. Clearly what you are doing is not working. Get an alt and multibox and use him to use d-scan and/or probes. Change your fit so as to not be so blingy and so costly when you lose it. Use D-scan. Use probes. Get buddies.

At this point saying, “I don’t know what to do,” is entirely unpersuasive. It is like the drunk looking for his car keys under the street light lamp even though he knows he lost his keys in the darkened parking lot. You are doing it wrong and complaining that you don’t want to change your behavior.

To be clear: this is your short coming and nobody else’s.

FFS…change your strategy then. If you are going to play solo, then be able to see when the bad men are coming for you.

There is no paradox, just you wanting to insist on the same approach even though it has cost you lots of ships.

Speaking as someone who only has mining alts, and has played solo for years, you need to reconsider what you think is winning.

Note: its not loyatly grinding for a blueprint of an extremely common populist ship thats cheaper on the market.

Then take that solo character to a corp/small alliance, get in with the CEO and after a year steal all the stuff and shut them down.

Thats what I did. To finance my wandering around having fun, not working and grinding and watching my back.
