The evil of Multiboxing

Solo is fine, multiple accounts is better.

Unfortunately I havent built my play around earning enough isk to PLEX multiple accounts, and am unwilling to sub more than one with cash.

Used to be a lot easier/less effort years ago.

But wouldn’t it be great tho? Imagine a corp op with friends, some flying around in combat ships offering protection, and a newbie buzzing back and fourth in a hauler while miners clear out the mining field. I’ve acctually been part of quite a few ops like that, and I’ll never forget the first corp op I was part of as an alpha. I was mining all my little venture could mine and after a few hours, when the op was over, the corp splitt the profit equaly on all members, and I could not believe that I got 67 million ISK for my effort, probably ten times the ammount I would have made alone. The paradox is that a few days later they where all back to afk mining with alts in barges.

I find it ironic that people talk about botting as a contributing factor to the devaluation of ISK in the game without acknowledging that the multitude of alts probably outnumber botting by a huge factor when it comes to ISK making, I guess the reason is simply that as long as it works to the benefit the horde of multiboxers it’s convenient to ignore, but I don’t see that there is much doubt that is has almost completely corrupted the experience for new players Despite this almost everybody agree that mining is a waste of time for a new solo player. Funny tho, that mining stil is popular for so many new players, atleast untill they realise that the only players who make a profit mining uses a horde of alts to profitt. Kinda make you want them all to just “go away”, as they are mostly afk anyway.

Yes Orren, there’s a lot of new players who offer to haul ore for a little company in return and a small piece of the profit and a good experience. That’s how you attract new players to the game, not by filling every tedious tasks with you own alts.

In that regard I don’t really see that there’s a huge leap from having a horde of alts performing tedious tasks to make ISK wile the player is afk, or multiboxing your own fleet to become invincible in your own right, to automation and botting. I know everybody don’t agree to that, but for me, as a solo player I don’t realy give a damn if the player botting or ratting is an afk alt, or a robot, for me it’s not much difference.

You don’t play solo, you finance your ingame experience with your mining alts. Try financing your solo adventures by solo mining in an venture, then maybe you’ll understand.

But I dont. Thats an assumtion youve made.

The alts finance their own operations.
My nest egg was made solo (see my previous reply) and continued by missioning, scanning and salvaging.

I own my corp (me and anyone who fancies joining for the luls) and my alts work with friends in a different corp.

The bottom line is this character would be the same and in the same position regardless of alts or not.

And Ill be damned if I ever do anything AFK.

And were you solo mining in a WH in a venture? Seems unlikely.

You should try exploring. Its quite simply the best adventure/isk/quick game you can have to finance a few disposable cruisers quickly.

Let me ask you a follow up question; would you ever buy Plex? (With real money I mean)

A very well thought out reply, even if my quote leaves out some parts. The things you bring up aren’t new in any game, sadly. At some point (maybe when they become EVE BitterVets) many players just don’t feel like teaming up with newbies anymore. Teaching a new guy something again, and again, and again, just isn’t something all of us can do. I can see it in myself after 20 years in the same real life job too - the newbie comes in after three years of job-specific school and can’t handle the simplest task on his own. I’ll try to help him but after the third call asking about something he could have found out just by reading the provided instructions I do start taking deep breaths. I’ve done this for twenty years with only a week of training, what’s so damn difficult for a kid who has access to new-fangled computers, smart phones and stuff? I’ll still speak to him calmly, trying to guide him, but with every new “emergency” I’ll care a little less. After a while I no longer correct his mistakes unless he asks me even if it hits the company. I’d just become the “wannabe boss tyrant” if I did anyway. Oh well, I guess I’m a BitterVet at life… Sorry for that.

Ingame I’d be happy to team up with a new player (or someone older than me) for some stuff, but I have limited time and a dodgy work schedule. I’d be letting people down by not showing up.

But the ISK devaluation is not about someone having an alt, it’s about massive botting multiboxers. Just as in that other game where you can witness sometimes hundreds of boosted “players” running instances for cash, it’s a game of gain vs loss before getting caught. Buy your skills with a stolen credit card, mine or run the right sites hard 24/7, sell off the profits and sell the ISK before you get caught. No game company has the legal clout to hunt these guys down. All the players with an alt or two, who have to go to work and sleep, are nothing compared to the criminals that actually make money on RMT in MMOs.

Yes, you’re right, I did made that assumption. Sorry about that.

I find it unlikely that you havent used your alts to cooperate in any way, but it’s besides the point.

It’s how I got to met Wingspan Delivery Services. I got a free party Geco drone and 10 million ISK as a token of their appreciation.

That’s not an easy question. Right now I don’t have to, I can easily buy PLEX 10+ characters if I wanted to the way I play now. In the begining I played as an alpha clone for so long that it became anoying for the other players in my corp. I was solo missioning level 4 missions in a Gnosis and I mined ore to produce my ships in my Venture. As you can imagine I used quite a bit of time to accuire all the minerals, and if you haven’t done so yourself, I can tall you that you have to go deep into low sec or wormhole space to find what you need. That in itself require a bit of exploration, but I can’t recomend it.

I would buy PLEX with real money if I couldn’t afford it with ISK, as I suspect most players do.

I made about 400+ million yesterday ratting in a wormhole before my Nestor got ganked, but I’m not supprised and I don’t consider it a huge loss. What frustrated me was that the ganker was multiboxing three VNIs and could probably send his alts to reship while his other alts had me pinned down. I just find this to be an unfair advantage a single player can PLEX himself to if he doesn’t have friends to help him.

This turn other who play with one character into sitting ducks no matter what ship they’re in. I dont see how anyone can say that it doesn’t matter if he beat me while multiboxing or played with his friends. To the victor go the spoils, and he won the spoils when he decided to multibox.

Devaluation make no distinction betweene multiboxing botts and a horde of alts run by a multiboxer. And as I stated earlyer, as a solo player I don’t see that distinction eighter. To me they’re both generating amounts that is unobtainable for me to compete with.

And it’s the same with a combat situation, it make no distinction to me if a player is accompanied by automated botts to help in combat, or if he multibox to the same effect. He win, even if I kill him first.

If you are that space rich I dont see whats preventing you from doing it too then.

if you read up in this thread you’ll find my golden rule to explain that.

Yes, especially when those buddies are multiboxing too.

I’d rather fight 1 guy with 3 ships than 3 guys with 3 ships

some, that’s an awfullot of people.

Thought I should point that out.

In light of the most recent big battle,I’m not waiting for a year to laugh.

Why aren’t you grouped up with other like-minded individuals?
No matter, it’s your (and all players’) choice.

EvE wasn’t designed as a solo game, but - much like wormholes - players found ways to introduce a way of playing that wasn’t intended. Also like wormholes, CCP saw the introduced style of play and decided that it was fine.

In the case of wormholes, they shifted some of their focus to life within, launched the Sister’s line of ships, and even created Thera. For Multi-boxing, they set pretty firm rules for what is and is not allowed.

If you want to play by their original thoughts - then stop living in the wormhole…

As someone who is either true solo or in a fleet, you just have to pick your fights more carefully. In your case I would not have put more retries on the line, if I would know after the first fight, that he is not alone.

I don’t like using active alts myself because they somehow would devalue my EvE experience, but I acknowledge and adapt to that others use them. There is nothing wrong with multi-boxing.

Need to agree with that. When i multibox in PvP i do stupid mistakes and miss obvious signs. I would say 2 my alts is equal to like 0.9 of one normal player in such cases.

Thanks god i multibox in PvP once in a while. :flushed:

IOW, you lost the fight. You died, lost your loot, and killed less than you lost. Don’t try to claim some kind of idiotic moral victory because you’re a “pure” player. You lost, get over it and stop making excuses.

At least the muiltiboxer didn’t make get any good salvage off of it… Sorry

Oh yeah I’m totally surprised. It just shocks the beejeezus out of me. I never knew players obsessed over anything much less the means of evaluating performance.

Thank you for opening my eyes to this.

I would have been lost without you.

Hold me.

I fail to see the issue.

Look… the way you describe it… this is no different (in reality much less effective) than someone working with other players.

The issue is there’s one of you and more than one on the other side. One player running it makes it EASIER for you, not harder. If there were 3 different player, you’d have fared worse, not better.

You’re viewing this a 1v1 because there’s only one guy at the keyboard. It’s not. It’s 3 vs 1 with the 3 playing very poorly… because there’s just one guy at the keyboard. 3 bad players are often going to beat one good one.

Get some friends… or if you cant sub more like he did. It works better with friends though.
