Those children were all girls. The hairstyles or haircuts, rather, are what young black children had in the 1970’s. The one in blue. Her hair is pulled back into a small tight bun. Probably do for a hair cut that mom has not gotten around to just yet. Plus her glasses would be typical of a girl/women of that era.
The two on the left have the typical hairstyles that can be seen on black children to this day. And before anyone say it. No white child’s hair could come close to this. Not with out a permanent and a lot of hair care involved.
Considering the surrounding that these children are in. Those dolls most likely represent their favorite toys. If not their only real toys. I would also point out that no boy would be caught dead playing with dolls with girls. Not unless he was willing to take the harassment and most likely a fight from the other boys.
That is even presuming his father would not have something to say along with a back of a hand. Boys of that time black, white, even Asian were discouraged from playing with girls and playing with dolls would have been unthinkable. The sexual revolution and equality be damned. Boys and girls were very much segregated when it came to playing. At best you might get away with playing “house”, but only if it was not a habit.
A different time and place. One wonders why we boomer can be more than a little screwed up. It started on the playgrounds.
