These forums are less than three weeks old, and already we have two forum threads (that Iāve noticed - there may be more) focussed on Walking in Stations
Good.
How many threads attempted to discuss avatar-based gameplay on the previous forums? From my perspective, that the topic of WiS isnāt going away, six years after Incarna, suggests it deserves at least some acknowledgement from CCP.
I understand that there are players who are unconvinced that WiS would bring meaningful gameplay to EVE Online, and that there are concerns that development time spent on WiS would come at the cost of focus on existing spaceship-bound features that need attention and improvement.
I donāt believe that itās impossible for CCP to do anything though. After all they wouldnāt be starting with absolutely nothing. Maybe a modest team could gather up everything available allowing a comprehensive and measured review to be carried out, and a detailed devblog written to inform the players of CCPās view.
The volume of suggestions, concerns, discussions, and other feedback across all of the previous forum threads must have some value.
At Fanfest 2012, there was a roundtable that showed how much CCP had achieved by the time the plug was pulled on Incarna development. It included a look at some veeery basic gameplay ideas with placeholder assets moving about a space and interacting with other placeholder assets. They also showed how the four racial Captainsā Quarters are made up of modular segments that could be used to create other, larger spaces (and if I remember correctly, the Gallente set had been to build other spaces). What else is available to CCP from the World of Darkness project and DUST 514?
I donāt think anyone is suggesting that an official dev team be created with the view to opening the door right now, but I think itās fair to have an official, informed response from CCP, rather than the players being left to go round in circles with little hope of the subject making any progress.
That WiS doesnāt appeal to everyone doesnāt invalidate it as a potential feature.
FacWar, Incursions, NullSec Sov and Wormholes all have their own specific features and each cater to some of the players not all of them. WiS would be no different.
WiS is the thing that was backburned and shot in the head before CCP backburned PvE with the Rubicon Plan. Itās literally two mental steps beyond CCPās current dead grip with fleet PvP.
And CCP doesnāt haves enough time left to even complete the Rubicon Plan, let alone thinking about reversing its collateral damage.
At this point, there are many things that would have been good, but none that is good enough to save the day.
Most simple concept that CCP never got right. Stations should first be won with ships and that gives enemies right to dock. Once you dock, you should have to PVP FPS style in station. I mean, jesus, this is so obvious.
CCP, you want 50k people online again! Do this! Take our bloody money!
OPEN the door
Looking back to some previous dev blogs, I do recall there was a long term roadmap visualisation. It is rather interesting and I do see an opportunity to note that there is room for Avatar Gameplay in there.
The image is from this dev blog by CCP Seagull.
Looking at it, we can clearly see that weāre currently in the Structures phase. Next up is the Corporation and Alliances rework and after that we can expect to see some New world properties and mechanics. All of this will add to some new sandbox gameplay and I am pretty sure that there can be room for Avatar Gameplay in the roadmap. Well I am not sure what are the exact plans our devs have in mind, but there is definitely an opportunity for them to make at least some baby steps in the direction of Ambulation/Incarna gameplay.
As I see it now, the time is right for us to gather and share any ideas that we have regarding avatar gameplay, so that we can have a solid ground for when our devs decide to start working on it again.
I think youāre right, and as I said in my earlier post, there must be so much across all of the previous forum threads.
Itād be a long and slow process to trawl through all of those threads and pick out the ideas and concerns (and yes, I do think both need to be included) from the rest of the noise.
As it happens, @Jack_Carrigan recently posted a thread in the CSM/Assembly Hall forum, proposing avatar gameplay. He finished his post with:
Star Citizen has raised over $150 million through crowd funding, which I think is a good reflection of the level of interest in such extensive and immersive gameplay.
For those who are concerned over the āinnevitable failure of EVE Onlineā (coming soon since 2003), how faster could that happen when other games take the initiative and push the boundaries CCP once did, with ambulation/Incarna? How many EVE players will move on to a game where the doors actually open? (Iāve seen the game footage - itās actually possible!)
Avatar gameplay is high on my requirements list for MMOs and the CQ barely meets my needs. To wit there are a few clothing options on the NEX that Iād love to have but the limited avatar space really kills any motivation to spend the 10 nuPlex.
That said itās painfully obvious that the CQ engine is simply inadequate for itās current task. Having it try to render additional avatars is pretty much hopeless. If avatar gameplay in Eve is to ever become a thing CCP will need to start from scratch.
And that would require a significant investment in human resources to accomplish.
Well, for a start CCP could easily write in code so that the door opens into an elevator which has a few buttons in it.
However only one button would be available to activate which would take players down to the stations basement level where they could travel through an endless maze of hallways and doors.
And while in that basement level when they turn around theyāll find themselves right back at the elevator again.
Now that would be a classic CCP troll.

Would walking in stations mean I would have to go out shopping in the station? Sounds like work. Casinos would be ok though.
Thatās for poors. Capsuleers would have people to deliver things to their quarters.
Then I have no quarrel with poors.
No brainer really. Instead of wasting time partly wrecking T3s, and ever-questing for the elusive balance (which is never going to happen), WiS is common sense.
Only if I can carry a sidearm while in the stations interior.
Lose sec status for killing peopleā¦they can buy armor for protection etc. Headshots destroy implantsā¦I like it.
wis officially dead check announcements
Perhaps the developers are doing the old fall back and regroup thing.
Itās been officially dead for 7 years .
It was dead the first time I entered it. It was never aliveā¦just tacked on.
Opportunities lost.
Captains Quarters being removed. WiS dead, long dead WiS.
Was it ever alive to begin with ?
I hope we get a way to āuseā our characters later down the road. Use our characters in Dust514 2 / Nova, whatever CCPās future FPS is ?
