Actually, your launcher does not display the message unless you either refresh it or close it and re-open it
Thatās a bit harsh. Any company could have the best programmers in the world, and still suffer the effects of a denial of service attack. This has nothing to do with CCP programmers, just the amount of server hardware CCP has access to. And the efforts of a DDOS mitigation company that they are working with.
Youāre right to a point.
They know these attacks are incoming, server hardware and bandwidth can be reinforced ahead of time with excess to help mitigate the attack. However we all know they wonāt spend the money to keep excess available so that they can possibly catch the attack before it crashes things.
Itās an unfortunate situation for all, and I imagine the communities lack of sympathy is because they arenāt getting any real compensation for the amount of in-game downtime being caused by this.
Pausing the countdown for days of Omega time left would probably be a reasonable trade off for giving them more time to figure out a solution. Otherwise people just see days of work equaling days of wasted time they paid for.
It is a DDOS though a lot less sophisticated than the last siege of havoc we had. I see people here complaining about persistent connection issues. There are many possible reasons for that, and I am not going to provide a course in routing, the loss of net neutrality, and Border Gateway Protocol in a post. My accounts are having connection problems, which is unusual, and which means different routers are being targeted than last time. While many commercial sites are easy to access, a sophisticated game site which uses many sockets for interprocess communication has some unique, and unavoidable, vulnerabilities to sophisticated attacks on the routers and on the sockets.
My own experience? I ran from Onnamon I to Kador Prime in a sub-2 second ship without cargo and without weapons so I could avoid ganks (mostly). I D/Ced in the pipe to Halaima and had to kill the EVE main task and log in againātook abo0ut 5 minutes of false starts. I then got as far as Madirmilire, noting clusters of blue ships round some stargates (D/C time is great for ganking), then was D/Ced again but this time the process shut down on its own. I reached Kador and docked and shut down. Fortunately, my accounts all have long training queues, so I can wait for better connectivity.
For those of you who are impatient, and who donāt understand the complexity of defending against attacks when you have so many points of connectivity, best to find a simpler game and biowaste your character here. This sort of problem is not completely tractable to mitigation, short of tracking down the perpetrators which became impossible when Microsoft added a facility to remove software remotely so they could kill pirated software on your computers (and you signed that agreement) So the script kiddies doing this can take some network testing software and add in the cracked removal tool so they can remove the software from the compromised computers without trace and move on to other slave zombie computers in their army and keep ahead of the folk who try to track them.
If you want to blame someone, blame the folk who write Operating systems with holes in them to allow such remote takeovers and blame the folk who open emails that have compromised software in them. My linux systems simply do not permit any installs of software without my root password, so my computers will never be in the army of attackers. I am in full control of where I get my software and when I install it, and the when is after I have scanned the source. No source? No install, or else an install that is walled off from any other code, without access to any layer below user. That is how I treat EVE, in its own simulated window system with no privileges.
And no, throwing more money and people at an attack like this hits a wall of diminishing returns. A detective effort has a very small chance of success, and it takes only one attacker to do something like this. If you have been in Rookie Help lately, you have probably seen some jitterbugs who think it is clever to flood the channel with long posts repeated often. If one of those gets bounced from EVE and spends the time, you see these results. No, I am not going to tell you where you can find the packages to use to do this, but it takes only a little knowledge and a search engine to find them.
No, they donāt, because only a complete idiot thinks a āproper jobā for a game developer is magically preventing network issues and DDoS attacks.
Whiny babies like you are why we barely get information about this stuff, because none of the devs want to waste time on the forums when this is the type of abuse they get for it.
did you guys read the UPDATE 19:53? itās not about ddos itās something with the server
And who asked the question why these attacks occur? or rather, why attack the sercher?
Testing with a different account, but same connection. The chat is unresponsive. Only player chats are listing, and none can be joined, so that socket is being hit hard. The Hypernet is working well with just a tiny bit of lag. I do not trust the overview or visuals of events in space right now. Those might be lagged as well, and the connection is probably not stable enough to haul something valuable.
To Be Fair, if we are in middle of space and getting attacked? Donāt let us die and if you do please replace the loss. Thanks.
nice i lost my skilling spree time i knew it wasnt worth to get into it one more timeā¦Stay healthy=
Stay alpha
@CCP_Convict thanks for not notifying the servers are still unstable as hell
have you ever been killed in pvp from someone logging in and they apear in local after one minute you got killed?i suppose there are some other even worse situations since this has already happend to me once all this time i was ānot having problemsā
It is all until it happens to you.Being an eve player i would love if everybody expirience this and then come and tell me about whining.
Thereās a highly visible note at the top of the launcherā¦
when servers are unstable like now you should not bring anything remotely shiney on the field yellow
