CCP as part of the legal contract it has with you reserves the right to cease providing gaming services - that would include changing such substantial requirements, or ceasing provision to users of other OSs - with one month notice. We did get that one-month notice per email - or at least i got 37 mails for it clogging up my email - as well as now via in-product (in launcher).
That system requirements were going to change was clear the moment they announced preliminary requirements for the Vanguard Playtest. Because, and i donāt think people realize that, Vanguard will be āintegratedā in the Eve client. Meaning theyāll iterate Eve Online users towards those requirements overall.
Personally? I have a Win10 Laptop. Iāll be doing PI on that, thatās what that crippled bloatware OS is at best good for. And then give it a month or two post-Dec-7th to see whether Eve still works on Proton. Either way my subscriptions end in May.
The number of people who believe that upgrading to Windows 10 will cost over ā¬1,000 or that Microsoft is stealing their files is staggering. Windows 7 is outdated in the world of software. If youāre genuinely concerned that your data might be compromised by switching to Windows 10/11, but donāt spare a thought for the numerous malware threats that Windows 7 is vulnerable to, it indicates a lack of understanding about computers. Malware developers donāt even need to actively create software to exploit Windows 7, as the operating system no longer receives updates that could neutralize such threats. Remaining on Windows 7 is a disaster waiting to happen.
However, Microsoft hasnt supported this OS since 2020. Thats 3 years. Continuing to use it while MS warns you to upgrade is literally the request you are asking ccp to make.
Running an EOL OS is a terrible practice and puts you at all sorts of risks.
If you are on an out of band OS MS listening to what you do and keeping your data safe is the least of your worries.
You are on a non-secure os that is no longer maintained and is vulnerable. Connecting it to the internet is exposing you to far more risks than MSās data harvesting.
Iām running Windows 8 on a pretty new 12th gen Intel I5, DDR5, Nvidia gtx 1080 desktop.
Itās running 10-years oldler OS amazingly smoothy and (unlinke Windows 10/11 machine) it will continue to do so after 5 or more years, as it wonāt get cluttered with adverts, spyware and bloat that is being served with each new update MS releases .
Buying a new gaming PC today and planning on using it till 2027 I would rather install Windows 8 which it can run better than any 2012 machine would, than run Windows 11 at 2027 update level - OS made for 2027 hardware
So why is CCP really dropping support for Windows 7 & 8?
Not because of the game but because of their new launcher which is hardly any better, except for not allowing for downloading data on deamd .
Itās based on Electron framework which is basically Chromium which recantly dropped support for Windows 7 & 8 and CCP will soon be forced to do the same.
This means that if someone figures out how to avoid launcher updates and bypass version checks the game may actually continue to work on 7&8 for a bit longer.
I do have Windows 10 dualbooted, so I think Iāll continue to play, but likely less often (and less often buy omega) as launching the game would require restarting the computer.
No, but you will be open to every single exploit in the os from January 2023 forward. This can be everything from minor security flaws to literal OS takeovers. So yeah⦠having MS install something during a patch might be inconvenient, but it beats someone literally able to access your OS, steal what they can, and use you as an attack vector for other people and their machines.
There are websites like Shodan where you can literally scan every IP in the world and look for nasty little things like these. And then exploit them. Folks that want to can look for you and exploit unpatched vulnerabilities.
No you dont have to upgrade if you dont want to. But keep in mind NOT updating because you dont like X or Y doesnt mean you wont be exposed to other things that are FAR worse than what you are concerned with. Do what you like, but you are playing a dangerous game.
Because they donāt want to commit dev resources to a platform that is unsupported by Microsoft as stated by the many posts here. No need to tinfoil hat this. Thatās literally all CCP is doing.
I cannot understand this sentence. It is 2023 not 2017. idk what you are on about here.
You need a new GPU in a few years lol. EDIT: YOU NEED A NEW GPU
I got a 3070 TI (8gb ram on the GPU) 32gb of ram and an Intel i9 12th gen on my gaming laptop. Runs fantastic and the cooling is awesome. 2022 was a great year for GPUs, technology, the gaming laptop, and PCs.
Go right ahead dude run Windows 7/8 I like the latest OS with latest security features to protect me against hackers and viruses.
Cases of someone getting their personal computer infected because of not installing updates are extremally rare, Iāve not heard of a single one.
Of course stying on old OS is NOT ADVISABLE for people who donāt have a lot of computer experience, but many EVE players actually do.
EVE, being a sci-fi game whith operating system - like interface attracts such people.
The vas majority of hacker attacks require some social engineering and input from the user. I use a modern browser and never give admin access to untrusted programs
Personal computers are not servers and they donāt get a public IP adress (the router does) and dontāt host anything.
Read the post I replied to EDIT: I meant 2027 not 2017
What you donāt realise is that Windows 10 and 11 have many of their features based on internet services making them more vunerelable to Zero-Day exploits from which updates cannot save you.
Steam is phasing out Windows 7 according to a helpful link from @Noot_Dnilb (Post 42)
So, I donāt know man. Looks like itās a rock and a hard place. The corporations want us to upgrade and welp thatās what we gotta do if you want video games.
There is no good solution to any of it but I am just an average joe gamer here. I like steam so I am on windows 11. I like EVE so I am not on Windows 7/8.
I get the concerns from Windows 11 and you are right. They are probably really valid. But I still need an OS to do my stuff on.
So what would a person like me do? What are my options? I am not just going to quit my favorite hobby because of security risks.
