@Arthur_Aihaken Not really. Modern gamers are a deplorable bunch of thinking deficient monkeys. That’s why these “Value Packs” and ships for sale for RL money are serious considerations to begin with.
you created an entire thread about it in features and ideas
way way overpriced
the 200 dollar pack is 301 canadian for me
I cant believe how much CCP focuses on monetization and marketing. Its not necessary if you make a good product.
Monetization and marketing are absolutely essential to staying in business and having the income to develop the game further. It would be criminal of CCP not to do it.
It’s only a question of doing it right, in ways that encourage players to pay and to feel they’ve received fair value for what they’re paying.
The Mastery packs appear to offer a roughly 38% discount from regular pricing, IF you’re someone who uses all the items included.
Mastery pack | Omega | PLEX | SP | Accel | MCT | Extract | Total | VALUE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Level 1 | 15d | 1 | $10 | 1 Accel +12 for 12 days | ||||
Level 2 | 30d | 100 | 250k | 1 | $20 | $20+5+8 = $33 = 39% | ||
Level 3 | 60d | 500 | 750k | 2 | $50 | $35+25+21 = $81 = 38% | ||
Level 4 | 90d | 1000 | 1,250k | 2 | 2 | 2 | $100 | $48+45+33+28+8 = $162 = 38% |
Level 5 | 180d | 3000 | 1,750k | 2 | 2 | 10 | $200 | $87+125+43+28+35 = $318 = 37% |
So each package represents a decent ‘sale’ in effect, which is directly diminished by any item that you don’t have much interest in. Since the packs are single purchase, the value of the packs would be increased by making the MCT and Accelerators market tradeable (for people who don’t have much interest in those).
The package discounts aren’t so steep that they beat out other sales. Most players will just wait for the largest sale on the specific things they want and then cherry-pick those, rather than get a similar discount but including items they don’t really need.
I also agree with @DeMichael_Crimson’s point that it seems odd to have the highest packages offer the worst accelerators. They may not need the best but they sure don’t need “+4 for 4 days”.
CCP has often structured their pricing and sales as if they’re handing out some direly precious commodity. So they try to throw a bunch of stuff together to make it ‘look’ more tempting while still finding ways to cheap out (like binding items).
CCP, c’mon guys, it’s virtual game goods. It’s as common as dirt. People can pick up better sales every day on Steam and a dozen other places.
In regards to “Ships for sale”, I personally don’t care. However I can see how the players who’ve literally built their entire EVE careers around the market pipeline would feel this is a line that definitely should not be crossed.
That said, the packs that offered ships in the past (going back to the original $5 ‘Career Packs’ that had things like frigates and haulers in them) have traditionally been single purchase packs with relatively low value ships, I doubt they’d have much impact on the market.
If CCP wanted to go ahead with ship sales, I’d suggest they offer a ‘bonus Evermark’ Paragon trade-in on the ships involved and start listing ‘Ships consumed by Paragon’ in the MER. Or maybe toss in a random Skinr item when those ships are traded in or something.
you say that now…
What happens when its not a 1 time purchase?
Any marauder, swipe card…
Any Drednaught, swipe card…
Any Titan, swipe card…
Drake, raven,ammo, modules, …
This is what happened to Serenity that lead to 1 month omega being 1 billion+ISK, led to massive blue donut, and led to the beginnings of the Frat Alliance coming to TQ as refugees.
Serenity is an entirely different bag of snakes. I don’t think we can draw any direct comparisons on what may or may not have been done differently on a server with a significantly lower player population.
Actually, no, that’s not ‘what happened to Serenity’. As Arthur said, Serenity was a different set of issues entirely. The fact they sold some ships was a side issue.
Reddit - What Happened to Serenity?
CCP was selling ships, modules, blueprints etc. over a decade ago, in starter packs which were (IIRC) ‘4 empires’ oriented (plus one Industrial). I still have some of the items on various accounts:
Nobody complained about them because they were cheap starter items that hardly anybody even knew about (and single purchase). They certainly didn’t lead to “swipe card for a Rorq” or any other nonsense.
Of course there’s always the potential that once it becomes ‘OK’ then CCP will ramp it up, and/or it will cost more players leaving in protest than it brings in. It’s probably wiser to leave that minimal source of income untapped and tune other offers to be more attractive to a wider audience.
People complained a lot about those because they represented the first salami slice in CCP’s scheme to supplant the player economy with offers favorable to them, not the players.
Coming soon to a deli near you…
Yes make MCTs tradable cos I have still got 2 from the last time there was a deal on and they’re just sitting there.
Packs that would compel me to buy would contain:
SP
PLEX
and
Accelerators (but not low level ones)
Also while we’re here, stop bundling low level accelerators in the higher tier packs. What the hell is the rationale for this? It’s stupid. Stop it.
Well if so, they managed to do it pretty invisibly. There were few threads on them at all, and the few I saw mostly focused on “are the contents of these packs worth it?” with little discussion beyond “read the description”.
However if you’ve got reams of complaints about them saved somewhere, I’d be interested to see them. They certainly don’t appear to have led to CCP mass-marketing player market stuff.
The much larger complaints about CCP packs over the years have been how clueless CCP has been about actually offering deals that players found valuable. Or even, “not a complete ripoff”. In that respect these current packs at least represent decent value. Not like the replacement packs they came out with in 2021:
Reddit - CCP_has_released_the_new_packs_and_theyre_awful
CCP needs to focus more on providing the contents players actually use, and less on stuffing packs with useless frills (eg. ships or +4 accelerators) that have little to no value, in attempts to artificially inflate the perceived value of the pack by less experienced players.
That only sets a foundation of mistrust for any future dealings with CCP. Give real value at a fair discount, and forget the merchandising tricks trying to get people to pay more for the cheap plastic in the bigger box.
