Are you asking about issues you personally have distinguishing in-character activity from out-of-character activity, or for advice on how to respond to someone else who cannot tell the difference between your in-character and out-of-character actions?
(Using in-character and out-of-character specifically in the context of ‘me as a player inside the game, actively playing the game to achieve the goals I have for my character’ for in-character vs ‘me as a player discussing the game we mutually play as a matter of exploring mechanics, lore, game development, etc.’ for out-of-character.)
Cleaned up off topic posts.
But you don’t need to respond to a specific argument to make an ad hominem.
That’s actually why it’s a fallacy : because you are not actually answering the argument. You are attacking the person INSTEAD OF the arguments.
So yes, you are insulting, off topic, ad hominem in that post.
In one word, you are a troll. And I say that, even though I totally disagree with the position of renly especially the abusive generalization he makes. And one day I will also tell him to ■■■■ off I guess.
Then lock this thread. The EVE forums are not an appropriate place for discussing the serious question of “what should I do if my loved one is suffering a severe mental health crisis and needs to get into treatment”. If the deleted posts are off-topic then no acceptable topic exists here and this thread must be locked.
Yes you do, it’s the definition of “ad hominem”. Please do some basic research on the terms you are using and learn the difference between an ad hominem and an insult.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
No you didn’t. This entire thread is off topic.
Mr Epeen
This is quite a charge. And I have not seen any evidence for it.
It can be hard to tell if some people are in character or not, in game or on the forum, but that’s the best I have seen and its not nearly enough.
No it’s not, actually the definition is that you DONT answer the argument but instead attack the person.
(of an argument or reaction) directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining.
RATHER THAN = INSTEAD
I suggest you actually follow your own advice and learn what an ad hominem (or personal attack) is.
The evidence is in your incessant posts claiming that gankers are IRL sociopaths because of their in-game actions. You are consistently unable to separate the events in a PvP game of spaceship destruction from the players behind the characters.
No.
“You suck, **** you” is an insult.
“You suck, therefore capital ships are overpowered” is an ad hominem.
Attacking someone because you dislike them and want to insult them, with no relation at all to any factual argument, is not an ad hominem.
Ad hominem: Latin for ‘to the person’, short for argumentum ad hominem , refers to several types of arguments, some but not all of which are fallacious. Typically this term refers to a rhetorical strategy where the speaker attacks the character, motive, or some other attribute of the person making an argument rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.
Insulting someone isn’t an “ad hominem” in and of itself.
SOME.
It’s spelled S…O…M…E.
Please look it up.
Not true.
Besides, read the OP. What the OP is claiming is far and away more extreme than anything I ever claimed, or anything you THINK I claimed.
indeed.
But here there is a relation to the argument he just made. If he did not make the previous argument you would not have answered him.
So yes your insult that were in answer to his argument make it an ad hominem.
Just because you were unable to answer him on the topic and chose to attack him instead of his argument, is enough to say you made an ad hominem.
Closing as per below.
