Just returning to EVE, and I have a question about VNI for ratting. I have good drones and armor skills, but poor shield skills. Can I fit VNI with Armor? doe’s it work with armor? or it works just with shield? maybe somebody can share they fits?
I’ve seen armour fits where you trade DPS lows for tank and chuck in tracking mids i think. However shield either passive regen or local rep tanked I think is better. Shields aren’t hard train, 24 hours to a weeks worth would be more than enough considering alphas can do havens with vexors.

Armor VNIs are far superior to shield VNIs. Shield VNIs are cheap and require less attention, their optimal use is to multibox 3+ of them to run sites in NS and due to their low price its just no big deal when you lose them. 2nd reason is they require minimal player interaction, so once you establish orbits and start killing stuff you can basically AFK, almost botting playstyle. it is what made them so popular.
Outside of that, you can run them anywhere you want a cheap fit, but they cant handle the harder more player intensive content, they take too long cause lower DPS or lack the tank or movement, etc.
Here is my armor VNI, unfortunately I can’t get to the game at the moment, so I don’t have exact fit, but you cna pretty much tell from the screenshot. BTW its a 100MN AB fit, not MWD or 10MN. Which is also awesome cause you don’t get the sig bloom but pretty good speed.
The auto target comp is there just for the +2 targets bonus, and its cap stable with either armor rep or the AB off and regens very quick up to around 60% ish, so no issues reactivating tank. The real nice thing about it is, I can literally 1 shot some cruisers, most need 2-3 volleys, but the crappy ones die in a single volley.
I use heavies primarily, fit has enough tracking, but usually switch to mediums for frigates.
Also, while this is somewhat player preference, I like it far better then Ishtar. Ishtar bonusses are focused on sentries and I don’t really like using sentries because then I have to come back and get them, sometimes its a real PITA when your sentry gets agro and you have a lot as well and you can’t drop speed or don’t wanna end up with bad angle / transversal for the pickup. That’s just my thing though.
