Well, yeah, the Airplane clip was exaggerated. My actual argument, however, was more nuanced. I do think that CCP does deserve plenty of blame, and that many players have valid complaints -and I said so in the video.
That being said, I want to make it clear that just because I admit that the clip was exaggerated, that doesn’t mean that I think it was a complete misrepresentation of player behavior. Yes many players do present reasoned arguments for valid complaints, but many don’t. At the ridiculous end of the spectrum, I’ve seen seen players do things like complain that they didn’t like free gifts* and literally invoke curses on CCP.
*Note: I should probably clarify because I once asserted that the Absolute Injection Augmenter was bad for the game. So, I am not saying that I saw players complaining that they thought a gift was bad for the game, I’m saying that I’ve seen players say stuff along the lines of, “I don’t care about free SP, because I already have all the SP I need. Come up with something better.”
As for the “missed opportunity,” I chose to spend more time defending CCP against unreasonable complaints, versus attacking them with valid criticisms, because I feel that there’s already enough people actively engaging in the latter, and not nearly enough in the former.
Past that, yeah, I think you bring up a lot of valid points.
To be clear, I’m not saying that players don’t have any valid criticisms, or that you don’t -after all, I have my own complaints. But I do adamantly assert that a significant amount of player complaining is absurd. Thus, I stand by what I said.
No I’m not. That was actually a communication mistake on my part. In fact, something I’ve talked about in this very thread (and in the video) was the competing interests of a diverse player base.
Regardless, what had happened was that I had been trying to say “we” whenever I could, but wasn’t paying attention there and accidentally said “everyone.”
And, if you’re curious, I’ve been trying to say “we” for two reasons. For one, saying “we were in the wrong” is a little less likely to make people get defensive than saying, “you were in the wrong.” And two, I’ve been guilty of some of points I brought up in the video. So, it be a little hypocritical of me to say “you” or “some players” instead of “we” and “us.”
Fortunately we can also assume with some confidence that what is said on the forums is not a representative cross section of what lives in the player base, either as attitude or as opinion .
It’s good to see that some threads at least give rise to more in-depth responses than some of the hyperbole and hysteric posts you referred to in your video.
Again, thanks for making the video and taking the time to answering the posts in your topic.
+1
Sorry I’m late to the thread. Watched the video and read through the comments. I appreciate the time and effort you put into getting your message across; overall entertaining and nice to see someone who cares about something and isn’t afraid to try and improve things. Not just in a selfish way either. You seem genuine and are not afraid to lay criticism when it is warranted.
What you do does make a difference. If you can help just one person I think it’s worth it.
You made my day better! Got a smile and a chuckle out of me.
I’m surprised to see you say that. Of course, CCP does make their share of mistakes, but I would have thought that guy who says, “no, ■■■■ off,” with more regularity than an atomic clock would think that at least some player complaints are BS.
A lot of complaints are ■■■■■■■■, doesnt mean I like the way CCP has developed the game the last few years. Skill injectors, Alpha staus, Fozzy sov, Abysmall space, asset safety, are but a few examples CCP is (still) heading in the wrong direction in my opinion. Not giving them ■■■■ for these atrocities is a crime against humanity.
Besides, most my ■■■■ off are to people who post shyte ideas which they think will make the game “better”.
I don’t see much outrage anymore. Most people just gave up caring. This forum moves at a ■■■■■■■ snails pace these days. the incarna statue shooting was over a fraction of the issues going on today., god, most of those people would have called you insane if you told them where this game would end up in 2020. Selling a monocole looks like some golden age of restraint.
The number of people here that pretend to be morally outraged that CCP isn’t listening to them or that CCP did something that will apparently cause the Earth to explode is silly at times. People are so quick to toss the micro-transaction label around or call CCP greedy or corrupt…yet day in and day out, here they are, whining that they are not getting the attention they demand. It seems that they enjoy the self imposed dysfunctional relationship and will make everyone just as miserable as themselves…
I personally can’t stand the “end of the world” Eve is dying types and call them out ever chance I get…yes I know that I could be part of the problem at times but FFS, these people hate most of the game yet only spew negativity here and assumingly(?) in game.
If somebody hates Eve then GTFO…move on and enjoy life by doing something you love else what you love is actually making others miserable. At the very least go play other games and give Eve a rest…take some personal responsibility for your own happiness.

Okay, bear with me. Cognitive dissonance is a fancy term for psychological discomfort that occurs because of an inconsistency between one’s beliefs and/or actions. Humans don’t like cognitive dissonance, and our brains will subconsciously try to reduce it. This is known as cognitive dissonance reduction. For example, consumers can feel psychological discomfort after making major purchases because they worry whether or not they made the right choice. So, they’ll subconsciously come up with further justifications that increase their confidence that they made the right choice.
^^Backed up by a metric butt ton of social psychology research.
vv Things that I have pulled out of my ass.
Have you ever seen a couple fight over all sorts of trivial stuff before breaking up? I suspect that it actually serves an important psychological function. It’s not easy to end a long term relationship that you’re emotionally invested in, and it can be really difficult to know if you’re making the right choice. Thus, I suspect that just like people can subconsciously look for further justification for their purchase choices, they too can look for justifications for major relationship choices -and fighting over stupid crap is one possible consequence of that. It’s because they are looking for disagreement; they are looking for every scrap of justification that they can find that they are making the right choice by ending it.
Well, I think we can do the same thing with our MMO’s. We spend years (if not decades) playing them, we invest incredible amounts of time and energy into our characters and getting good, we make friends and we form communities. Video game or not, it’s not easy to walk away from communities your care about and game that you have played for one quarter of your life.
And so I think that some bitter vets seem invested in their anger because they are actually subconsciously looking for as much confirmation as possible that winning Eve is the right choice. After all, it’s far easier to walk away from a dying pile of trash than it is to walk away from a flawed gem that is still improving.
You know we already have @Black_Pedro and @Qia_Kare as our forum sages right? Just because you can make videos that sometimes causes milk to shoot out of people’s noses in laughter doesn’t mean we’re going to build you an office as well…Pedro broke the budget with that request for wall-to-wall-to-wall purple velvet and we’re still dealing with the customs charges for those lamas brought in from Peru.
Any how…you right about Cognitive dissonance but I would have worded it as the sunken cost fallacy. So then the $1M ISK question is how do you deal with these people as they seem to be both toxic and malignant (in the ways you mentioned in the vid not just in the typical forum meaning)?
Now, this is not to say that bittervets don’t have any valid criticisms (because many of them have plenty), but I’m not sure every bitter vet can be reasoned with. Like I said, some seem straight up invested in being angry, and can have (what I perceive as) some illogical or flimsy justifications for being so. Well, I may not be able to persuade every bitter vet, but hopefully I can limit the spread of their more absurd beliefs and how much damage they do to community morale.
