My old laptop was refurbished by my husband and our nephew. While someday it may end up in a landfill, at least it won’t be us who put it there. They gift the refurbished PCs to senior citizens and told not to toss them out in the trash. The boys have their hands full with a storage room 8 by 12 feet full of this stuff.
I too try to re-use this stuff, it helps to have a lot of friends and family to give this stuff onto but I’ve repurposed like halves of laptops where the screen is smashed but the rest is still good, they lend themselves well to use as compacts (like what NUCs are) since they have HDMI or VGA ports and USB ports.
One of the kids is rocking a Nvidia 1080 FTW3, that was a top of the line card when it came out, it’s been through my boss, me, my son and now my daughter has it, much of the machine has followed along.
Coreboot and its various payloads are a great way to refresh old computers as well. Especially, if your computer is from a manufacturer like Lenovo that doesn’t like you replacing hardware like the Wi-Fi card.
Just PUZZLED why this question is promoting negative feedback? I am not asking for anything FREE!!! My company I work for in real life has business contacts. Irony of irony. Dell Computers 20% off because I am employee 30 minutes after i submitted my question. (Looking at my cellphone? Is the damn thing listening to me?) TBH with with a 14 y/o laptop, 9 1/2 and 3 year old rebuilt Desktops. I obviously will wait. When it is GAMETIME. I will ask my nephew who is like a son to me and a I.T professional will pick for me. Maybe this fall it will be my 60th birthday present.
Well in fact you are, this discount comes at a price. Even discount coupons costs someone money. Let’s break it down into the financials. You said, up there “It would be nice if EVE online could use it size and strength to get its players new machines at a discount.”.
This means CCP has to pay a sale representative to negotiate a deal with a computer manufacturer. This is unknown time and wages. We have all seen games that advertise Alienware or Nvidia cards, but these are not discounts, they are commercials to remind you who invested money into the game. What you are asking is for them to seek out a computer company that will offer their end user a discount. The manufacturer would in turn get what?
Commercials cost money. Now let’s say they offer a $500 rebate on their machine. Per user of Eve Online, who willing to buy a new $1,200 PC. Should 10,000 players take them up on the offer that is $5,000,000 in rebates. Who pays the cost of all those rebates?
I don’t see anything above, I would call toxic or negative feedback. They have the right to disagree with your opinion and they are just being realistic about asking any company for anything they couldn’t afford themselves. I won’t bash Dell but they are not my “go to” PC product. If I were in dire need of a machine to play Eve Online, I could find a 5 year old refurbished PC online for roughly $250, put Linux OS, and I would know it would work for this game for several years to come.
Custom PCs are cheaper and better than any brand name computer. You can build your own upgradable PC with all of the connections and experience you have.
