Genesis 2:17 is the warning. Genesis 3:19 is the passage, stating that man would return to dust, meaning death became part of human life from then on.
Some interpret “in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” as meaning death began from that point forward, not that Adam physically died within that same 24-hour period.
Other conclude that a day lasted a thousand years when God spoke those Words.
