You are attempting to active a passive module

I currently have a venture fitted Mining Laser Upgrade I. When I attempt to use it it says its on passive mode. It doesn’t seem to work at all. Anyone know how I can fix this?

The mining laser upgrade is a passive module, you don’t click it to activate it as it is already active so long as it’s in a low slot and is not greyed out (completely disabled). You activate the mining laser itself, which will be in the high slot.

How to do I get the laser in the high slot if it says its lower powered and won’t fit? Man, this game can be so confusing..

There are “passive” and “active” modules in EVE.

Active modules such as Microwarp Drives, Afterburners, Blasters, Autocannons, Mining guns, Multispectrum Shields, Webifiers, Data and Relic Analyzers, Energy Nosphertu… are modules that engage when clicked.

Passive modules such as Mining Laser Upgrades, Shield Hardeners, Weapons Upgrades… do not engage when clicked but their effect is active when fitted.

Here is a link about modules in EVE:

Mining Laser into the High Slot

Mining Laser Upgrade into the Low

The Mining Laser Upgrade is not actually a Mining Laser Module, it is a separate module, so eventually you would have one of each.

The mining laser upgrade module is a passive module that upgrades your mining laser modules.

Mining lasers go in the turret slots of your ship, which are high slots. Mining laser upgrade is a low slot module. While mining you may want to use both, but it’s also possible to use low slots for other purposes like defence.

Mining lasers will let you mine ore. Mining laser upgrades let you mine ore faster.

There are two related modules (others have already said this, so I shall still bore you senseless…)

The Miner - fitted in a high slot - actually does the work of mining the rock and pulling it into your ship. It will work quite happily on it’s own. Target rock, fire miner at it. Wait. A Venture will fit two of these as each Miner requires a Turret slot.
The Mining Laser Upgrade - fitted in a low slot - improves the effectiveness of the Miner. The Mining Laser Upgrade I (the very basic one) gives a 5% improvement. It works by “just being there” and doesn’t need activating and gives that improvement to all the fitted miners.

1MN Monopropellant Enduring Afterburner
Medium Shield Extender I
Multispectrum Shield Hardener I

Particle Bore Compact Mining Laser

[Empty High slot]

Small EM Shield Reinforcer I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I

Acolyte I x2

This fitting (click to expand) will require a little skill training for a brand new player, but does give a very basic target to aim for. It’ll mine at about the equivalent of 25k ISK of ore per minute.

Mining isn’t the most effective way of earning an income - exploration, trading, mission running - try them all, see what floats your boat.

Thanks! That seems to work!

A standard Venture looks like this: EVE Workbench

That’s about 1m ISK invest (shield and rigs can be chosen somewhat cheaper) and a very good starter.
