2023/05/11 - Ongoing - Intermittent chat issues

Let’s see how it will work after DT.

I just wonder like how the ■■■■ can you have a working MMO, but are not able to have a proper chat?

Like who designed this chat that every few months completely fails and that will multiple times per day “reconnect” and you can never be sure if the other party received your message.

It doesn’t help that some fundamental game features like local rely on this broken system that completely change the game experience when this stuff happens.

Is it a problem with server-infrastructure, like an update that ruins some configuration?
Is it just bad programming?
Is it a problem with something third party? like something that checks the chat for bad words or something that runs on some amazon cloud or something?
Is it some cyber-attack on the system?

How are the devs making sure this doesn’t happen again in the future + fix the current bugs with disconnecting/reconnecting chats that persisted for years now?

There are 2 problems here:

  1. Either chat is empty (no people, no messages that you change the system) or system throwing you out from custom channels
  2. Chat remains full with a last random system you went through, never changing the system once you jump gates.

As a humble IT guy on my day job that I am, I believe the problem is not entirely connected to the externalization of the chat system, but with the interface between the game server to the chat system, maybe also a message bus system that went yolo.

Let’s hope it’s going to be fixed, I am not especially pissed about local, but for the other channels, for example our FC had to announce the destination for a ping on discord, alliance chat and corp chat were dead.

I;ve also seen people in 2 systems at once as i moved through when ive confirmed there only in 1 system

Lol i jumped into a wh and saw most of amarr local had followed me there

It’s not just the chats that are glitchy. I have been sitting in 3 systems for over an hour with each at least 10 characters in space, but the map does not update the Pilots In Space filter data display. The systems still say there are only 1 and 2 chars in space.
Or possibly these people have left ages ago and local chat never updated, but I see blues come and go every now and then, so that can’t be the case. :person_shrugging:

Nah, it’s completely random. Sometimes local lags, sometimes it’s corp or some other channel. Often a few. Logout/login doesn’t seem to do much, but completely quitting and restarting seems to do better - in those cases when it’s all empty. So just fixes chat disconnect…

Just re omega acc, its not worth it at all … I dont want to play like in wh space everywhere…

A great celebration of the 20th anniversary. The event is nothing and I, having been playong the game for 10 years, didnt even feel any celebration. So now its scary to undock exhumer because the local chat has stopped working correctly in null.
It feels like with the failed event, CCP wants to pay back the ISK for the failed 20th anniversary celebration

And now they added disconnects to the mix, for good measure.

There’s nothing as difficult as an intermittent problem that disappears while you’re trying to locate the cause. Ask any techy. We’ll just have to bare with it until the bug makes a mistake

Is there an MS support case for this? If so, I can check internally how things are going and potentially chase things. If I can help, let me know.

I call this the ‘observer effect’. It’s when one person is experiencing an event, or repeatable event, that ceases to be or can no longer be repeated when you call someone to show them. Often the event returns or becomes repeatable again once the observer has departed. The observer effect is what makes troubleshooting someone else’s equipment so difficult.

  1. When in doubt, give it a good whack.

  1. Also check that all the hamsters are accounted for, and none got loose. Post an observer so that they are never in a mixed state (loose and not-loose).

  2. Any experimental outcome is influenced by the presence of observers (thank you, Werner and Erwin). See point 2.

Welcome to the modern internet. It’s fairly common to use cloud computing, especially when you consider how dynamic loads can be. It’s just too expensive and complicated to have all the hardware yourself.

Take Netflicks as an example, they need more hardware when everyone comes home from work for a few hours, but when everyone is at work they need fewer machines.

Besides, AWS will have a much higher uptime standard than CCP. Please don’t take this as a criticism of CCP, AWS provides infrastructure as their product, and people who pay mega bucks for it need reliance and good uptime, fi they don’t get it, they go off to other providers like Azure.

So having memed about this all day, I was just having a discussion about this with some friends and we were placing bets on what the cause might be…

One thing we have noticed is that it doesn’t affect everyone at the same time, and sometimes rebooting the client can fix it; however, if your connection to chat is defective everything you see is wrong and others have no idea you exist. We also noticed that when chat is working, joining or leaving channels (e.g., changing star systems) can break it.

This got me thinking, @CCP_Paragon, could it be the code that is used to subscribe/unsubscribe our clients from the various channels? I suspect if the servers themselves were down you’d have logs or a lack thereof so I’m kind of thinking API/Connection-based issues. After all, as much as XMPP is painful and I kind of hate it, it’s fairly stable.

Anyway, wanted to share my thought on the off chance it might be useful. Thought about filing a BR but well, you guys took the bug reporting website offline, and well that kinda ruins the fun of filling bug reports for me.

Best of luck, really hope this is fixed tomorrow.

P.S An explanation would be nice when the cause is found, I always admired and enjoyed this blog: https://www.eveonline.com/news/view/about-the-boot.ini-issue
