I could for sure see loosening those kinds of restrictions. Make it “accomplish this task” only and not force you into a specific fit
Which is how it worked very well for a long time.
If i remember correctly, in the NPE, the npc “bad guys” are flying Angel Cartel ships, and if (it was player, not an npc and) you are flying a mach, then you probably know how to fit it for combat, and there were kinda a lot of machs, so why would only ONE of them be fit “to the purpose”?

Yea, i know that in the npe you are flying an Astro, but the npc’s that killed you are in angel cartel ships
I was talking about what the npc’s are flying, not what you are flying in the npe
the main one you see is flying an ospray
