Risk/reward has always been a part of Eve. Definitely not some new shenanigans to make you buy plex.
Mostly depends on your play style. If you take the time to earn in other ways then you can absorb those losses when taking on more risky endeavors.
If all you do is spam pvp or spam abyssals then you probably going to have to sell plex at some point.
