Alpha WH Nomad?

I’m thinking of trying out nomad lifestyle in WHs, but all my single omega account characters are already in use so I was thinking making a new one for a nomad, but as an alpha. Could it work? Are there decent alpha modules and ships to have some fun as a nomad in whs?

Cant cloak as an alpha

This character was created as a challenge. The rules:

  • Use an alpha account.
  • Do not pay for anything.
  • Reach the alpha skill cap.
  • Do not log into other characters until done.

To accomplish these goals, a lot of alpha daily skill injectors were required. The income that made it possible came first from running missions, and later exploration.

Alpha characters cannot use cloaks, so it was necessary to learn to explore without them, which is perfectly fine, just fit weapons, neutralizers and Nosferatu modules on the high slot where most explorers would fit a cloak.

A way to compensate for not having a cloak is to use speed while scanning. The explorer flies to a safe bookmark in space, created while in warp, and head on a random direction (up or down) with a propulsion module active. Most explorers would use a microwarpdrive, which makes the ship fast enough. If the pilot is distracted and the ship is scanned by combat probes, an attacker will first warp to the ship’s position when the scan was completed, forcing him to probe again to get another fix when the explorer is at least 150 km away, so that he can perform a short warp again before engaging. At this point he’ll have to decloak (if he was cloaked) to activate his own propulsion module to catch up before targeting and warp-disrupting the explorer’s ship, and his combat probes will have been deployed longer in space, increasing the chances that the explorer will notice them on d-scan and warp somewhere else.

If not using a cloak, and when not actively engaged, safely log off from the game to avoid being destroyed.

There are freeport stations in multiple Anoikis systems. Check out Wormlife Freeports. This can be a good base of operations.

i do live in a freeport wormhole and we have some alpha players there too. Cloack is an issue but in a freeport system usually you have other omega player and they scout stuffs and help each other.

The alpha players are using Oprey Navy with HAM to rat in C3 and use Ventures for gas and metamorphosis because it has better bonus on hacking compared to T1 frigates.

doing it solo is a hard and you might be ganked often, but in a team where others have scouts, it should be easy.

I lived in a Wormlife WH alpha mining all the gas sites. I found it not hard at all, it is far too dull and the boredom sets in quickly. I tried it for about 6 months, I was a resident of a Class 1 J134833, and then moved to another Class 3 WH J104643. I decided wormhole life is just a bit too quiet.

Sure I had loses, but there wasn’t much entertainment value. I needed an alt to “open the door” when I got caught and to clear the rats from the gas sites. The alt used a destroyer which worked out fine. I managed to even work out how to do those 5 nasty sentry turrets at the Ordinary Perimeter Reservoir using my alpha destroyer. When hanging off the station’s tether you can scan without being disturbed. One of the occupants told me I was in danger just sitting out there. But when you are tethered to the Freeport, it both repairs and protects you from attacks. There are a lot of benefits to being inside a Wormlife Freeport wormhole.

When I moved to the C3, I tried a new tactic which again works, but somewhat boring to do. Using all 3 characters I moved them into the C3 and left one sitting in a large hauler marked by a shared safe point I called Dock. The alt in the Destroyer was at a marked safe point I named Station and that one deployed a Mobile Depot for supplies, ammo, and repair materials. I worked the area from my scan point in my gas mining venture. All I had to do was mine gas, jetcan at Dock once done logoff as John, logon to the Dock hauler character, pick up the jetcan contents into the hauler and logoff until full. If I had rats, I logged in as the alt at Station, ratted the site and returned to station. Even gankers would need to rescan for me, so could logoff ( takes 30 seconds ) and I was gone. I only did the C3 for a month to prove a concept worked.

If you enjoy AFK mining, wormhole alpha gas mining works. Sure I would return 45 minutes later to find my venture destroyed, but it was paid off. I never left a first time venture run without making the first load back into dock. My ventures cost about 10 million ISK and a full load paid more than enough for them on the first run.

I live out here in known space now, among the entertaining gankers. Most of them I find to be a disappointment the rest are just clowns. If you happen to be a ganker or a clown, and you find my ship mining, I am probably not at the keyboard. Let me know, if you need assistance targeting it, I know it must be real difficult for you.

For alpha accounts, the most you can realistically do is daytrip low class space for relic and data sites.

If you want to try out living in a wormhole, you really need to be Omega. You really need to have better skills to effectively PvE in worm holes, and cloaking is incredibly important for PvP aspects.

Once again, I lived and worked inside 2 wormholes as an alpha miner. It isn’t that hard, just boring.

Which goes back to my point. We want new players to ENJOY their time, revel in the risk, and reap the rewards. Being bored in a game is a sign that you need to do something else with your time.

If you want to undock in a venture and mine, you can do that in highsec, and there are many other alpha-friendly activities that are fun and engaging.
The lack of T2 scan skills and T2 scan modules is a huge QoL impediment to wormhole life, and the lack of T2 medium weapons will severely limit your solo PvE options.

It will be boring because scanning is arduous and there isn’t much that the alpha character can effectively accomplish. I never said it was impossible, but the additional tedium is such that I certainly would recommend against it. If you aren’t having fun, than what is the point?

It is almost as if, you are not reading my full posting up there 5 of 8. Since I stated;

No one bothered me. People don’t talk in wormholes and it might be fine for people who are into living with the rats and almost no contact with other players. I mined all the gas and rocks. I killed the rats. I seldom encountered a ganker.

I never found it any different from scanning in low or null sec. I know the gas sites don’t contain rats in low-sec. But at least there are real people in low-sec to make mining more of a challenge. I never once felt limited by my options. In J space I normally scanned down all the cosmics, killed rats, set my venture to collect gas and walked away to have a meal or take in a TV show. Upon return I would deposit my cargo and start again until done. What quality of life am I missing here? Should I be glued to the monitor pinging that Dscan?

The higher skills, with how signal strength and lower deviation mean going from IV’s to V’s (and use of T2 modules) will straight up half or reduce to 1/3 the amount of time you need to scan down a system. That means a lot more time making isk or exploring and a lot less time in the scan window, which is the quality of life. This will improve the null/low scanning quality of life as well, but due to the mandatory nature of needing to scan to leave a wormhole that you live in, you will be doing this activity a lot more as a WHer.

If you are doing the low tier gas sites, their combat difficulty is about a c1 or c2 anomaly wave at best, which is easily manageable without T2 weaponry or skills.

The real money maker comes from c3+ site ratting, which will net you significantly more income per unit time spent compared to other WH activities. Due to the rats remote repping each other, you will want to have very good skills to maximize your damage output and clear the sites faster.

You should be – similar to how you should be doing so in LS. Learning D-scan, and properly managing scan distances, can improve lowsec mining effectiveness as you waste less time warping to a station/citadel when people are passing through the area, but still make it to safety when people are coming after you.

In WH space, it is your only life line and it is in your best interest to make the most of it.

going AFK while mining in a WH is equally, if not more, risky than doing it in lowsec.
