Please don’t twist my words. I never suggested that ganking solely drives away new players. Ganking is ganking - regardless of the intended or unintended victim (be it a Venture or blinged Marauder).
My point still stands: there’s no recourse to ganking other than quitting or choosing to stay docked up (fitting anti-gank doesn’t always work).
And what Titans have to do with high-sec ganking is beyond me (I understand the point you’re trying to make, but it’s a bad example).
Sorry, I thought this was a silly thread with a silly suggestion, so the comparisons I was making wasn’t fully serious.
If you want a more serious discussion I can do that.
What do you mean, ‘no recourse to ganking’?
Paying attention, fitting your ship less greedy by fitting some tank, flying with friends (or alts, if you prefer)… do those things not help you against ganks?
Sure. If you’re solo, friends or alts aren’t necessarily an option. Scanning helps - but it’s not foolproof. And anti-gank fits only work until someone decides to make a point of killing you regardless of whether it’s profitable or not (many empty freighters can attest to this).
In those scenarios where you end up a victim (despite your best attempts), there’s zero recourse other than throwing up a token bounty for the kill right.
Pay attention, don’t AFK, and don’t haul 37 billion ISK worth of crap at once. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been ganked in 20 years. It’s a non-issue…
Sometimes ■■■■ just happens. Everything you do to maximize your odds of survival sometimes just isn’t enough. That’s life. That’s why you don’t fly what you can’t lose. The game won’t change because you can’t adapt. What did you lose that you’re so salty about anyway? I’m surprised that a member of CODE has a problem with ganking.
This is the usual “think of the new players” post, but only addressing issues faced by non newbros lol. Blinged marauders, barges and ice mining all famously new player activities. Just a coincidence you got ganked twice in a marauder and porp last month and now you make this post. Did you get ganked on an alt and now you are are venting here?
I can’t believe some people are actually in favor of this. You’re already 99% safe in high sec as it is if you have at least one brain cell. Go play World of Warcraft if you want safe zones.
This change would be a big nail in the coffin for Eve.
Ganking in the game is actually totally okay. You need to have ways to kill people that have given you reason to jump on them and then hiding behind an impenetrable shield.
However, I dislike the current design of ganking (or better: HighSec Piracy, an Outlaw Gameplay style), which turns it basically to a multiboxing-math-issue and in the end everything is over in at most 20 seconds and 15 minutes later the same chars will sit in the same ships ready at the same spot repeating the whole scenario. It’s kinda boring, completely counter-immersive, unlogical and potentially frustrating.
I would like to see a whole expansion dedicated to HS PvP, adressing both ganking and wardecs, making both more interactive, more challenging, more immersive, more logical and better balanced in a way that both can be very lucrative if the right targets are chosen, but very costly if intentionally newbs are targeted for the sake of just blowing them up.
So yes, I can understand that people dislike ganking (in it’s current form), but the way isn’t to remove it or restrict it so hard that nobody will do it any more. People who want to chose an outlaw-style in HS should be able to do so and doing it should come with several disadvantages but also new options that law-abiding citizens don’t have (black markets, outlawed technology, non-public shortcuts, ways to manipulate the policeforces etc…). So it comes at a price, but offers opportunities that enable someone to play the game in a unique fashion. Not requiring to multibox 12 catalysts and watching them “fight” for 20seconds and hoping that the loot fairy has mercy.
And, Syzigium, you know this how, exactly? Did you ask a full-time ganker? I cannot think of any among my acquaintances who would describe the activity in such a way, and certainly not when considering its broad appeal to them. There are occasional disappointments, etc., but you seem to be saying that the whole thing is unattractive. But, again, to whom?
Perhaps you mean that the activity would appear so to you, were you to try it; that, I can appreciate.
It is surely the case that gankers enjoy the sport because they are drawn to it. You are not required to legislate for their enjoyment and, though some of your ideas may have merit, you should beware of prescribing medicine when the patient has not complained of being unwell. Or something like that.
I too would like to see some attention paid to Highsec PvP, but ganking currently appears to be fairly stable - from the point of view of players who conduct such operations - so there might be more mileage in addressing other areas of concern first.
I found your comments interesting, though, and I think ‘there may be trouble ahead…’, so perhaps you will get your way!
