Outside of EvE, ganking is a general term with multiple meanings. In EvE Online, ganking is a technical term referring specifically to Highsec ganking.
There’s absolutely nothing controversial about it whatever. Highsec ganking is intended roleplay. It is built into the game itself. It would be pointless having different Concord response times between 0.5 to 1.0 systems if there was never anything for Concord to respond to. It would be pointless allowing people to switch to red status in highsec if the intent was not that this allowed people to attack others in highsec. This isn’t some exploit that gankers get around….it is, and always has been for 20 years, the entire intended design of the game.
If people don’t like that, they are free to go play something else. It really is as simple as that. EVE is supposed to be a tough and dystopian game. It is not ‘Farmville In Space’.
Fact is, any of my own ships, sometimes carrying expensive stuff, could be ganked at any moment. My Vargur could be ganked outside Jita ( which has happened to a colleague in my corp ). So could my Loki, or my Machariel. I’m fine with the risk…..and here’s the crucial point….that risk is 90% of what makes EVE enjoyable.
Gank is a mash up of the phrase gang kill. It’s any form of tactic that revolves around using a vastly larger force to ambush and force a kill. Usually in the form of X vs 1.
Certain EVE players beat on the drum that this only applies to high sec suicide ganks, and that 10v1 in any other part of space doesn’t count because…reasons.
Just so we are clear here….im not complaining about ganking. Ive been here a long time and Ive stated several times that i fully support it. The only reason i even inserted the term “controversial” into my response…is because the complainers that are here have made it that. Thats it.
The more ganks there are, the better it is for me…and others that benefit from it.
I agree. The whiners try to make it controversial….but its on par with whining about sand bunkers on a golf course or complaining that a knight in chess can jump over other pieces.
Thank you for the answer and i thought my standards were off.
Thank you also… as of me ganking happens everywhere, was confused why everyone pertended thats only happens in HighSec.
fortunately, fiction is allowed so you should be fine…
I think it’s intentionally done as a misdirection tactic by certain parties.
Person A: “I think high sec suicide ganking is a frustrating mechanic that heavily favors the gankers.”
Person B: “You want just want EVE to be a game with zero loss by making PvP illegal everywhere!”
As EVE is an open sandbox PvP game where uneven numbered fights are more the rule than the exception and ambushes are a large part of the game rather than a rare occurrence, it is rather inefficient to call every other kill in this game a ‘gank’.
People prefer to be more specific instead.
Something was a blops drop, a roam, a gate camp, a suicide gank, etc.
Within that context it’s only natural that most people in EVE use ‘gank’ only as a shortened form refer to that last mentioned specific form of uneven PvP of suicide ‘ganking’.
You could of course be stubborn and call all other forms of uneven PvP in EVE ‘ganks’ too, but the wondrous nature of language means that communication works best if you and others have a similar idea of what words are supposed to mean in a context.
So, feel free to keep talking about null sec gate camps, blops drops and other forms of uneven PvP as ganks too if you want, but if you do, don’t be surprised if most other players get confused by your different use of EVE lexicon.
After all, to most players in EVE a gank is what happens when people sacrifice ships to CONCORD in high security space in order to kill a target.
EVE isn’t unique in redefining ‘gank’ to mean something specific. Back when I played World of Warcraft it was not uncommon to get ganked by a single high level Rogue. Not a gang, just one player.
Calm down, all systems wide laughing stock.
Ah, and fyi- Not only I am not a miner, I am, in fact, a ganker( among other things)- and you still cant read, after all these years here.
You aren’t a ganker.
Stop pretending, miner.
Cry more.
Salty tears of realization that you are not important.
Kissy kiss.
Yes, I’m crying so hard right now.
Boo hoo.
I left when they cloaked, I came back half a day later, killed a hauler and they uncloaked and killed my looter.
Then proceed to show their personality in DM.
The issue isn’t that there are no mitigation strategies. There are plenty.
You can tank your ship, scout ahead, use bookmarks, cloak, split cargo, avoid autopilot, or simply stay off grid.
But those are mitigation tools, not counterplay.
Counterplay means the defender has a way to meaningfully disrupt or punish the attacker’s operation.
In highsec ganking, the attacker chooses the time, place, and target. The engagement is pre-calculated, the hull loss is budgeted, and CONCORD guarantees a predictable endpoint.
The defender’s options mostly revolve around avoiding the attack entirely.
Avoidance is not the same as counterplay.
CCP can fix it.
You can fix it, too!
- bait them by various tactics to make them burn their ships and secstatus for nothing
- reduce their DPS with combat ships or jammers before CONCORD arrives to make their gank fail
- bring cloaked T3 fleetboosters and cloaked T3 logis to make their gank fail
- bump them if they use Artillery ships until they leave or dock
- bump their target if they use shortrange ships to make the gank fail
- gank them too in cheap destroyers or frigates if they use Battlecruisers
- buy off the security tags from the market to increase their costs to reset security status
- organize a crew to tag-hunt in lowsec and trash the tags to create a shortage in tag supply, increasing their costs to gank
BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE!
If the problem is that big, you will surely find like-minded people to support your cause and form an efficient organization around it! Don’t be lazy!
This is my forum account.
Someone should explain to you how this game works.
Also, if you want to troll, at least check the dates.
There is one problem in your thinking.
I trully, as a ganker, cant care less for you popos( self apointed police), you see, the one great thing about this game is that you can relocate- and you popos are so damn lazy.
BUT, back to the problem in your thinking- IF ANYONE is using their head, as you clearly do- then YOU are NOT my target, now are you?
Yes, there are people that do not know how to do math and pay their accounts with real money, but if you do know what are you doing, one shuttle carrying 2bil in cargo per day is more then enough to pay for plex, for security and ships.
Like I said- people are lazy as fk.
