Any theories on why so many people have quit over the last 2 years?

Thrill was too strong a word, but it does give them a sense of power, usually because they otherwise feel powerless.

I’ve been a victim and I’ve victimized other people. It’s part of the bullying cycle. Frankly, disconnecting from your empathy towards victims is one of the steps towards becoming a bully yourself.

Hopefully CCP has metrics on why people have left.

It really is not called “the bullying cycle”.

It’s called competition, sexual selection and evolution. It’s called the human condition.

There is no perfect kumbayah state of human existence where everyone is blissed out and everything is perfect. There never was a group of pure and perfectly wise folks who were corrupted by perfectly evil folks.

You were not born in a state of divine grace and then corrupted by the devil. You were born into a species which selects it’s future genetic makeup through competition and sexual selection. We are not fungi, nor rocks. We are not fragments of Angels sent to suffer in the material pool, until enlightenment is bestowed us by a wonderful priest of the one true church.

Eve Online is a social environment where folks compete with imaginary space ships in order to display their intelligence, dedication and competence within a very complex set of rules. Everyone who comes here wants the same thing: to not suck, perhaps to win, in front of peers.

Critically, you do not have to log on. You do not have to compete. There are no conscripts playing this game. It is a voluntary competition.

“bullying” is where a person cannot escape persecution, and when they suffer real life harm.

A person who cries and complains of psychological harm when they lose a fight they volunteered for is not the victim of “bullying”. They are intellectually dishonest and salty. End of.

Now, Eve does have a problem with “mobbing”, which is when a large group of small ballers gang up on an individual in order to imagine that they are somehow competent as a result. This is not really a problem, because the individual who is ganked in this way by smallballers knows that their warrior spirit frightened the blob, and that they are superior to the members of the blob. Dying to a blob is evidence of superiority, not inferiority. This is why killboard stats are ridiculous.

The only real problem with mobbing and blobbing is that it makes the game frustratingly boring, and it is kind of degenerate for CCP to cater to these shrieking gangs of half men. There is no honour or class to it. Looking at you, ECM.

Now the leaders of corps and alliances will argue that the leadership of blobs is an exercise in competitive 1v1 pvp, between the leaders, and I can see that point of view. All I can say, however, is that I doubt Eve has any kind of future if it is a game made for 1 out of every 10’000 players.

But please, stop with the lecturing about “bullying”.

We are all crusaders here. Ain’t nobody a conscript being fed into a rich man’s cannon, except maybe the goons.

All you have to lose are you pixels and your isk, and your dignity if you cry because of those losses.

It doesn’t matter if you lose your fights. If you keep fighting, you win self respect.

Hopefully CCP are reading some of these threads and reflecting on the decision to give posters some slack and unban others.

The amount of flaming and personal insults being thrown around is way ott now.

Players in the past got a week ban for far less than this, ISD needs un-neutering and be allowed to get a grip of the forums again. Because right now they’re crap…

Agreed, there’s no reason to pay certain folks any mind. In my time I have had to block over 70 pilots lol, if I had bothered to read the crap they typed it would have stressed me out. People have been racist and insulting to me, but I never really let it stress me. I figured they are sad and ignorant people in no way worthy of my precious time.

I don’t completely agree with your post, but you have a good number of valid points, IMO.

What should be done about them?
Who?
The bullies I am focused on, who want to psychologically harm others.
Where are they?
We’ll I’ve seen them and experienced them. But not gankers or scammers or anything else as that’s allowed, its just the evil bullies who only do it for tears and to make people feel bad.
Ok, how do you know they only do it for tears or only those reasons?
We’ll I don’t.

What would you like to do?

for the record when was carebear a deffacto insult, probably around the same time people started calling pirates griefers,
yes lots of risk averse people whine on the forums,
but a carebear is just someone who prefers to make not destroy and doesn’t do shooty pvp,
not all carebears are risk averse who want the game changed to suit their playstyle and no one elses

well they never used to be

I just think the old school carebears are probably too busy in game to call other players names for just playing eve, or maybe they left because high sec got boring.

As all of these other MMOs are doing so well and have managed to keep running with full expansions etc for 14 years so I too think it would be a good idea for CCP to change their core game design based on complaints that have been appearing on their forums since 2003, to cater to players who may be large in number but who tend not to stay long term because the pve is a bit boring tbh.

Well said.

If this was around the time eve started getting 50k pcu, which I don’t know I wasn’t here,
then perhaps slightly lessening numbers and a more spread out internationally diverse player base as we seem to have now
might lead to another type of carebear.

who knows but speculation is fun

EVE may have become too complex, or simple, depending on how you see it, for its own good.

In that sense, I do agree with the Luddites that hate any and all change.

But on the otherhand, had EVE not been further developed all these years, I dont think it would be here today, nor us playing it.

Well, yeah, that’s a given. Who would continue to play a game that gets zero investment from the host? Even WOW classic will need to be patched and updated in a number of ways in order to be viable. Discussion is furious about whether the project is even viable because the realists are listing all the bad things about the old game that nu-WOW have forgotten about, that list is long and growing longer. Without adaption WOW classic cannot survive.

On a similar vein the new faction guns project that CCP are working on is long overdue, I’ve been making threads about it for 4 years and god damn it I will keep making them until shield boosters, reppers and faction guns are fixed. Not just modified, but actually updated to match the modern game.

And rather than empty fist shaking I’ve said it for years that the way to do so is 3-fold: better than t2, adjust faction tags cost to be more realistic, differentiate navy and pirate gear properly and add pirate faction gear to the pirate faction store.

While we’re at it they can expand on the pirate faction space a bit too and lower the drop rates. I trade primarily in faction and DED gear, it’s so cheap and readily available some faction gear is cheaper than the T2 of the same type. It shouldn’t be like that, to have so much saturation.

your ■■■■ game is dying and you are looking for the answers, but you really don’t want to hear them. Not many people want to play a game where grief monkeys and numbers have all the advantages, especially one that is knowledge based and so completely devoid of player skill, and where PVE is nothing more than an attempt to serve you up to pathetic people who are more than likely angry at the world and looking to take their anger out on the defenseless, rather than put themselves in a situation where they would have a challenge and take a significant risk for their reward.

EVE, as I see it, is uniquely a mmorpg for gutter trash gamers. It is a place where the most pathetic individuals end up after having gotten ■■■■ on in other games. In the 20+ years i’ve been gaming online, every griefer I have ever encountered has been absolute ■■■■ at the game they play. In EVE these people are a protected class that never leave high sec and never lose anything of value.

Just the fact that scamming is played off as part of the games “harsh environment” rather than what it really is, CCP being unwilling to spend the money to police it, goes to show how much of a joke the game really is.

The launcher deleting all your in game settings, preferences and chats every month would do it.
