Back to the game! Is low attention, semi-afk, solo mining still possible?

Hi. I would like to get my way to play some eve, at least casually.

A simple casual way to ease myself into eve is having it running on my side, on a laptop while I work on my computer.

I like to casually mine, not having to pay much attention to the game. So I can earn some low wage income that helps me to support riskier and FUN activities.
That also helps me to be somewhat connected and interest in the game, so I feel motivated to get myself actually involved!.

Please dont reply that I should not afk eve. My account I think is from 2007. I am not a great eve player but I dont need that kind of lessons already :stuck_out_tongue:

Last time I tried to mine with my orca, lets say that it did not end well lol. To be honest in that moment I was fully afk, I needed to attend some emergency at home. Because sometimes internet spaceships are not the priority.

That got me worried, I don’t want to lose my other orca.
So I wonder, is there any way to reasonably solo mine in eve at the moment?
By the way I loved running mining ops with my old corpmates but at the moment I dont think I can commit.

If you semi-AFK mining, you’re going to get suicide ganked, or ganked by Triglavian NPCs (a new form of belt rat with the power and AI of the best PVP players, introduced to deter botting and encourage fleeting up - if you can’t combat them, flee).

Rule of thumb and general principle: if you engage in passive gameplay, you’re going to die, and EVE is evolving to make passive gameplay more and more difficult. The one niche where passive gameplay somewhat remains viable is doing PVE in Hisec while war immune if you want to use a low-interaction fit (a sniper or droneboat). Note if you deploy a Mobile Tractor Unit to scoop up your stuff, don’t be surprised if players drop into your mission site and destroy your MTU just because they can’t (CONCORD won’t stop them).

EvE is not for you.

It is a shame then.

If I do high sec PVE I could die of a boredom attack. High sec PVE is in my opinion not just boring but near pathetic. Almost as bad as being backed by a massive 0.0 alliance and pretend you are hardcore for “being in null sec.”

I quite like doing a bit of side mining… Maybe CCP is telling us that we should not solo mine?. They are the devs. I understand some people abuse the mechanics.
I have never mined to pay my subscription, life is too short for that.

That reduces the only thing to do to… station trading?

If you want to reduce the odds of being ganked to a minimum, fly something very sturdy and cheap in high security space and mine in belts. There’s a perfect ship for that called Procurer.

While it has lower mining yield than other mining ships, it’s the safest one to fly as it’s cheap and very tanky, and not worth suicide ganking as it’d cost more than the worth it drops to successfully kill a properly fit one.

Here’s a moderately balanced fit, it will mine slower than usual but will be safer with 60k+ EHP, cap stable with both invulnerability fields active:

[Procurer, პროკურორი]
Mining Laser Upgrade II
Damage Control II

Medium Shield Extender II
Survey Scanner II
Multispectrum Shield Hardener II
Multispectrum Shield Hardener II

Modulated Strip Miner II
Modulated Strip Miner II

Medium EM Shield Reinforcer I
Medium Thermal Shield Reinforcer I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I

Hornet II x5
Salvage Drone I x1
Mining Drone II x4

Veldspar Mining Crystal II x4

Alternatively, you can go full tank with 5 medium scout drones to fight back better too, with more than 70k EHP:

[Procurer, Noobcurer]
Reinforced Bulkheads II
Damage Control II

Multispectrum Shield Hardener II

Medium Shield Extender II
Survey Scanner II

Hammerhead II x5

I would suggest actually playing the game. EVE is quite fun when you actually play it. And when I say “play it”, I mean actively, because Active EVE and Passive EVE are substantially different, even if you eliminate near-guarantees of death from suicide ganks and NPC ganks.

Only a very small minority of players play EVE so they can mine and indy and freight and trade all day with little to no intention of EVER utilizing the (combat/combat-related) ships they’ve spend manmonths of their lives making or generating ISK for which they could procure. I advise you not to be in that minority.

I totally agree Archer.
But sometimes I kinda want to start eve, when I am busy at home.

Is it safe to assume you want to passively generate income for the purpose of splurging for when you can actually actively play the game? I’m the Co-Head of the United Standings Improvement Agency [USIA], and we pay mission runners handsomely for running missions they were probably already running to begin with. There are several passive setups you can use to generate a considerable amount of income. No work quotes, pick-and-choose the jobs you want to work. You can make more in a day with us than you’d make in a week’s worth of mining in hisec. Join the USIA Discord to discuss further.

Is it possible? Sure.

Why play game when you don’t want to play the game?

It reduces you to play a different game, like solitaire for instance.

Yes.

That is the easiest way to do it. That or use two screens on your computer and run the game and your work programs simultaneously.

Mining when fully afk is risky. At the same time, orca is the best ship to use for afk mining. This is because, 1) it has the most tank, but far more importantly, 2) it has by far the biggest ore hold.

The upside is you can set your orca to mine for around two hours before you have to empty it or otherwise pay it much attention. The downside is there are very few opportunities in hisec where you can actually mine for two hours without the asteroid running out. You either have to mine ice or a rock in a moon ore belt. Ice is the safer bet but is also very slow in an orca which can only deploy a single ice harvesting drone. Mining ore in an orca is much quicker but the only rocks big enough are moon rocks and these only occur in 0.5 systems. Plus, you can no longer mine compressible ore from moon belts. Which might make ice the better (only?) option.

The risks when mining (semi) afk are greatly over-stated. Especially in an orca. You are much more likely to be bumped off the ore than actually ganked. And even that is hugely uncommon in my observation. Although, that might simply depend on, 1) which timezone you mine in, and 2) you choosing the right place to mine. Something like, an ice belt that is around 8-10 jumps from the closest regional trade hub and also not located in a low sec border system. These places do exist and although ganking does occur, orca losses are not common. There are specialists who take out orca, but currently they are focusing on ships (travelling) close to Jita.

The alternative is for you to still to mine moon ore in 0.5 systems. Even if you find a 0.5 system with belts in a non lowsec-bordering system, the risk is definitely higher. But again, in an orca, the risk is much more likely that you will get bumped or that your drones will be shot. Latter especially if you use augmented drones. This is important because some of the npc rats will also shoot drones and augmented are expensive to lose.

Final option is just to mine in a regular ore belt using an orca with 5 drones. This is much more a semi-active than an afk process. But, with the sound turned down the computer will simply tell you each time a rock has disappeared and that you need to re-set the drone. Which is not too distracting when working.

short answer: yes

long answer - yes as long as you find yourself a backwater system, grab procurer/skiff and fit it with proper tank, and pay that minimal attention to wether or not known gankers are in the system.

also when picking system make sure it none of ones hat spawn roaming triglavians - for example I have heard edencom fortresses are nice to mine at.

So, do I have enought time to dock in case the triv attack me?
No chance of being scrambled?
I guess I can keep the laptop with everything muted BUT the tank alerts?

I still remember when I went back to my room to see my orca in 1% structure and I had a moment like this…

ok boy, when I grow up I hope will be able to handle this game as good as you do.

You know that statement is horse$|-|!][

Planetary interaction will make you a good amount of isk and it’s passive.

Industry and trading are also good ways to make semi afk isk if you are willing to do the math.

You never will if you play AFK.

Enlighten me.

You should uninstall the game. Bye.
