Actually, I just checked, my toon only has Drones IV and I can fly a Tristan just fine. I believe you can fly it with a lower drones skill even, you just cannot use more drones than your skill level (i.e. my current max is 4 drones, even though the Tristan can handle 5 simultaneously).

I think he made “requires” italic because it is not referring to being a requirement of flying the ship but instead flying it (more) effectively.
Also funny typo: if you have Drones VI trained you are the only person in EVE who has such a high level of that skill.

Why go for frigates and security missions when you can farm FW Complexes? Tristan is good for both.

Correct. I mean that without it, you are sacrificing a large chunk of your effectiveness. It isn’t as obvious as some other ships, but without drones V you are not using all possible weapons, it is like throwing away a whole gun.
