CCP is now getting bad reviews on ProtonDB

For your terrible example to work you would have to assume those 250k would care about EVE, given its niche status thats not going to be the case, so look at the actual numbers and realise the truth

So your argument is, Eve is dying, why care.

Linux is growing, Eve is dying, ok.

Linux user (gamer) base going up, Eve gamer base going down.

Looks to me Linux is winning. Linux gaming will be around a lot longer than Eve and getting bigger.

That’s because you make the mistake of looking at relative changes, rather than the numbers themselves.

A very tiny number can triple and still be a very tiny number.

Again, big gaming companies are putting effort into Linux, that’s not because it’s terrible or small or going down or short lived.

Numbers themselves, peak Eve users is 25k? down from 2010 numbers.

Linux users 250,000 on Steam alone.

But what is your argument, that CCP should not have focused on MacOS but on Linux instead?

Because you seem to find it strange that CCP chose MacOS.

Nope, they can put effort on Linux after the Mac.

Okay, fair enough.

Or they can not put effort on Linux at all and instead put that effort in retaining new players.

I’m sure that if they can increase player retention for all windows and mac players by 10%, it will beat putting a lot of effort into linux.

And yet the chart on Eve gamers still are in a downtrend.

Players in Eve resist change, they also resist Linux. ā€œNo changeā€ maximilist players probably will go.

But how is that related to the Linux discussion?

Because there seems to be a pattern of resistance to change and resistance to anything non Windows and non Mac. They even cringe about the web version.

I don’t follow, sorry.

Those that are always pushing against any kind of change in Eve still want it stuck in the 2010 era.

But how is that related to Linux?

Because it’s something ā€œdifferentā€. They don’t like that. They’re ā€œno changeā€ and Windows maximilists.

That’s possibly a symptom of having old men play a game and don’t want change.

I’m not against Linux support, if it was a sensible choice.

It’s just not a sensible choice, given the amount of players who use Linux and not just one version of it but many different ones.

Valve is making non-sensible choices then?

Steam uses Valve’s own package format.

Distributing games is a different market than distributing your own game.

Yes, Valve makes their own games as well, but unless I’m wrong, they earn a lot of money by providing a game distribution platform. It makes sense to open shop at as many locations as you want if you want a good market share.

This is different from producing your own game and getting enough players to play that one game to afford continued development of that game.

Valve isn’t necessarily making a non-sensible choice, but they’re in a different position than CCP.

Eve is on Steam.

Windows, Mac and Linux share technologies used in Eve. QT, Python, OpenGL, Vulkan.

Yes, and?

EVE on steam is only a small part of the EVE playerbase. 17% in my previous napkin math.

17% of what?

What % of Eve gamer base is Mac?
