But when new ore is added they’d have to come up with more adjectives and at some point it just gets silly. I mean bootleg yterium is apparently a thing.
On the contrary, it could be fun if not everything is symmetrical and patterns are sometimes broken.
Multiple types of ore could be sparkling, multiple could be dense. Not all of them of course, that would indeed get boring, but some reuse breaks patterns and adds more entropy. More fun!
Whereas I did not find the gun renames (yet), some other examples I have found digging through the archives of old –
Quad LiF Fueled Booster Rockets" are now known as "Prototype 100MN MicroWarpdrive I
“LiF Fueled Booster Rockets” are now known as “Experimental 100MN Afterburner I”
Phased Monopropellant I Hydrazine Boosters" are now known as "Upgraded 1MN Microwarpdrive I
“Catalyzed Cold-Gas Arcjet Thrusters” are now known as “Limited 1MN MicroWarpdrive I”
“Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon Microwarpdrive” are now known as “Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive I”
“Monopropellant Hydrazine Boosters” are now known as “Limited 1MN Afterburner I”
“Cold-Gas Arcjet Thrusters” are now known as “Experimental 1MN Afterburner I”
“Y-S8 Hydrocarbon Afterburners” are now known as “Experimental 10MN Afterburner I”
In order to simplify the naming system in EVE, the following changes have been made to Weapons & Ammunition:
All EM missiles will now have the name ‘Mjolnir’.
All Thermal missiles will now have the name ‘Inferno’.
All Kinetic missiles will now have the name ‘Trauma’. (SCOURGE)
All Explosive missiles will now have the name ‘Nova’.
All scripts now carry the suffix ‘Script’ after their name. This affects Focused Warp Disruption, Optimal Range Disruption, Tracking Speed Disruption, Scan Resolution, Targeting Range, Optimal Range and Tracking Speed.
Shield hardeners, Shield resistance amplifiers, Armor hardeners, Energized plating and Resistance plating will all have a new prefix based on the damage type. These new prefixes will simply be EM/Thermal/Kinetic/Explosive.
Shield hardeners, Shield resistance amplifiers, Armor hardeners, Energized plating and Resistance plating which allow for multiple resist types will now carry the prefix ‘Adaptive’.
Modules and weapons for Capital, Battleships, Cruisers and Frigates will now show a size of XL, Large, Medium or Small for almost all items. Some exceptions will apply for named modules or X Large shield boosters for battleships. Unfortunately the list of all modules is much too large to fit into patch notes.
I forgot how colorful many of the old, old names were!
I see they still kept some of the colourful old names though. ‘Monopropellant’ is used for enduring afterburners if I recall correctly, and Quad LiF for the restrained modules.
In fact, during tiericide of those modules they’ve consistently made names of ‘colourful name’+‘meta name’+‘module type’, keeping most of the old colourful names intact. I like it!
(But yea, that’s what bugs me a lot about these new names. The old ones were descriptive of what you see of the ore. The new names are what you know about the ore after receiving lab results back.)
I could be wrong, but I believe the changed names were in the game for a spell before enough grumbling from the player base had CCP slowly change and / or revert the names to their current naming.
A bit off the subject with a thought that just came to mind. Would players be highly opposed if instead of seeing an asteroid belt with Dense Veldspar, Concentrated Veldspar, and Veldspar rocks all over (as an example), initially all the rocks appear just as Veldspar. As you mine into the top layers, there is a chance the deeper layers reveals Concentrated Veldspar. And if you luck out and dig through the Concentrated, there is a core of Dense! Almost like a random luck instead of instantly (especially if pressed for time) to just hit the best. Yes, your cargo will have multiple piles, but similar to “you struck it rich” when that huge rock wore out to just be Veldspar, but this small nothing of a rock had the jackpot within!
No changes in the mining process with the lasers. As the Veldspar changes to Concentrate, the cycle of rock dumps into its respective piles and continues.
But that would require more than just a string chance, which makes it less likely CCP adds it. Also for the gameplay of ‘random lucky rich piece of ore’ while mining we’re getting mining crits in the next update already.
I’m not against it, but I think the current implementation where the valuable versions are visible from the start is a better mechanic, as it makes mobility and long range of miners relevant, which often is ignored.
