This seems to be an insane assumption. If you were quitting you’d just stop playing, right?
People sell toons to make ISK so their other toons are richer.
Maybe they used to do some activity and now don’t and so are selling toons trained for that.
Maybe they trained up toons specifically to sell, knowing some set of skills was valued and worth the time/effort.
But almost none of them want to quit.

If you read the posts, some are alts they quit using. Ive sold a couple of alts i made. Either i didnt need them, or i just quit logging them in. So id strip some sp if i could, sell the injectors, and sell the 5m sp toons for 2-3 bil.
But we have to pay FC $20 real money to transfer characters.
Some private transactions occur when ppl wanna help a friend, so they’ll transfer an old toon to them.

Skill injectors have diminishing returns, so if a friend joins, and their friend had a 50 mil toon that can do activities they wanna do, its easier to sell the toon to them than inject skills where they get less out of the injectors over time, costing them more money in the end.

They don’t sell their own characters. They have created those characters for the purposes of income, or alternatively they sell some alts they have no use for anymore. They’re not going anywhere, they just make money off of it.

So keeping the main character actively subscribed to the game is an addiction? You need to add more modifiers than that for that to be a true statement.
This is entertainment. People can do what they want with their characters as long as it doesn’t break EULA.

Why would you do that?
Just pay for a subscription while you use it.
People sell characters because they want ISK, which means they’re likely still playing the game on another character of have other reasons to have ISK even if they don’t need the character anymore.
That’s a nice offer.
I would however say it’s much easier to start again in EVE with a character that already has SP trained than to start over from fresh, unless you for some reason made an ass of yourself in a past EVE life that it’s better to start under a new identity.
Your own experience may have had signs of an addiction but many players are not having addiction issues.
You may be projecting.

I have a bunch of two-decades old characters with clean killboards and not too bad names, and a bunch of characters trained for dreads or specific doctrine fits which I’ll never use again from when I was doing F1 monkey stuff. People are willing to pay for it, so why should the characters just rot away on my roster?
Really? What gave that away, I wonder. You’d have to pick from at least 20 different cues on this thread alone.

I’ve sometimes seen people wanting to buy clean (low SP) characters (or corps) with interesting/good names. Of course, it’s subjective what a good name is, but there’s even demand for that.
No it doesn’t. 20USD is a character transfer fee to another account. It doesn’t matter if it’s a ‘‘private’’ sale to a friend. Even if you wanna transfer your own character between your own accounts you’ll pay the fee.
Go and try to f*ck with somebody else. Because it’s not gonna happen between you and I.
