Concurrent/Peak Players, Retention, New Player Experience

Oh dear. I give up. It is clearly pointless trying to explain to you what a ‘date’ even is, let alone that arbitrary dates ought not to be used for stats. Stats is about comparing like for like…NOT picking arbitrary random dates anywhere within an arbitrary period.

Well let me remind you once more, you picked the dates.

As you clearly don’t understand what a date is…

When do you actually mean it?

The numbers, Mason! What do they mean!?

EVE has never had a massive player base, and it never will. There are 7,800 systems in EVE. Even at it’s absolute peak of 65k concurrent players, that is only 8 players per system. At any given time, 10% of the player base is in a single system. Jita…

Jita capped at 2000 or 2500.

If 10% is in Jita, then is only 25k players, oh wait that is actually pretty close to 29k average today… Now I have to actually log in and see how many are in Jita.

Online count from Launcher 12676, people in local in Jita 754, 754/12767 = 5.9%
Only 3 minutes till DT though will have to try remember make one at a better time of day later.

In 2013 (I believe Jita took even less people then, but lets assume it took 2500 for example reasons) 47k average. 2.5/47 = 5.3%

It is true Eve never had a massive playerbase, but it did have nearly double as many subscribed accounts as it has total active accounts now.

Back then there were also less multiboxing, and less content that was number locked. So the difference in players available for a positive interaction Massive Multiplayer style, is much larger than just the difference in (online) players.

Combined this gives a huge decrease in the amount of players available for a positive interaction Massive Multiplayer style. Some of us liked the way Eve was way more active to us back then - a lot.

EDIT Trying Friday 14:43, Launcher online count: 23801, Jita local 1244. 1244/23801 = 5.2%

Played the game for 20 years also. I love(d) it, it was super fun when I was a student and had time to be engaged in null sec. Now I just want to build and play spacetycoon, but I always end up quitting when I start because its frustraighting with HS ganking.

Been a long time since I played so dont know where the game is, but back in my days it was safer in null, it just requires more timeinvestment.

Anyway im considering resubbing, but can see that HS ganking is still a thing and yea… then its just not gonna happen.

I agree with you on low sec though, when I last played you needed to go to stations in null as part of the building process. It was great, added a element of danger to it, that was accepted (unlike HS ganking) and thus you are ok with getting ganked now and then.

Really think fixing HS ganking would do a lot for this game.

Out of curiosity (from a player that is considering returning)

What do you mean highsec is 99.999% safe?

Just so you know - i’ve quit the game a couple of times due to highsec ganking. Considering going back, but I mean if you can fly around in cheap ships and shoot people for fun that just want to space tycoon, im just not.

Fine if its not a game for me - but then its just not.

When so many people over so many years consistently say the same. Have you ever considered you might be wrong?

I also dont get why CCP dont just test it - experiment with it for 3 months and see what happens. Its been asked for since the beginning, and its been ( at least when i played ) gradually made harder to highsec gank. Why not take the gloves off and give (a lot) of people what they want that love the game?

Ccp says its not the problem

So you aren’t gonna play the game… cuz little ol me is gonna prevent you from AFK derping along as a tycoon? A tycoon? Like consider this exhibit A in our presentation of the megalomaniacal miner, he feels entitled to be King of Jita without so much as a single challenge.

I mean that over 4 years I’ve done thousands of highsec jumps, in all manner of ships both expensive and cheap, sometimes carrying expensive cargo, without being ganked. I have also mined…..I just don’t tell people where or brag ( like some do ) of having an invincible ship.

What better reason is there for playing EVE ? The risk in EVE is 99.99% of the enjoyment. People such as myself, who are both predator and prey, grasp this most.
