It’s actually the verifiable truth happening every single day, not sure why people think they gonna rant in the forums and everything will change…
Do that dcan forever thing. yeah.
@Leggone_Stracks I haven’t used D-scan so much yet, lol. I don’t fully understand it at all. I need to watch a couple of videos on it to know what I’m doing. I think I prefer the probes, it’s much more straightforward in my mind for now.
Its nifty. Esp for checking gates before you get there for gate camps.
I’m sure it is. I just have to learn to use it
Quick 'n Dirty tutorial suggestion:
Go to a well-populated high sec system that has belts, or lots of ships jumping through gates. To test, you’re just looking to practice scanning down other ships. Unlike combat probes – which show up on other capsuleers’ DScan and lets them know you are combat probing – DScanning is totally passive, built in to every ship.
Know the DScan hotkey. For me, it is “v”. Press it vigorously. It has three inputs and one output: it takes in a “scan everything up to X AU distance away” input, a “scan orientation” input, and a “scan a Y-degreed-cone around the scan orientation” input, and spits out a list of objects detected within that X distance, and Y-degree-cone.
A quirk to watch out for: The DScan window has a filter, so you don’t get overwhelmed with space junk. It is based on the filters available for your Overview Window (legacy code). The best suggestion I have is to use an Overview pack like Z-S, which comes with “DScan: Defensive” and “DScan: Offensive” filters. In the DScan window, choose one of those – in general “Defensive” will filter out just to let you know what kind of ships are nearby, and “Offensive” will include a few more things to give you a clue what activities they may be doing.
Finally, in the beginning use DScan in conjunction with the solar system map (hotkey: F9?). There will be a green sphere/hemisphere/cone that shows what you’re DScanning down, and it can be very helpful to build up the geometric understanding and intuition.
DScan is free in all ships, doesn’t invoke CONCORD, doesn’t spook other capsuleers (like combat probes do), so sitting off a planet in high sec in a free corvette practicing scanning other capsuleers is totally fine, and you’re not risking much.
Bonus tip: Holding the DScan hotkey and clicking something in the overview or map, will immediately orient your DScan to that thing and do a DScan. So if I see a gate in my overview, “press and hold V + click the gate” immediately 1) orients my DScan for me and 2) issues the DScan. That’s how one can quickly get a DScan of something without spending a great deal of time manually moving the DScan orientation/camera trying to get the perfect angle.
CCP should charge 1 million isk per dscan.
I’m gonna ask you a question similar to the “futures contract” guy: Why wait for CCP when you could be the one issuing DScan permits?
We could use some forum-posting permits instead. Not allowed to post anywhere outside of the technical help and new player sections unless war-eligible.
@Io_Koval Thank you so much for taking the time to explain it. That’s very gracious of you.
And the bonus tip is awesome!
Now I have somewhere to start.
Can I click in the Dscan window and jump to the item I clicked on?
No. It will not allow you to warp to anything, that’s not what dscan is for. If you want to warp somewhere, need to use probes
You can warp to celestials and structures using d-scan.
Even structures you don’t have access to.
Just not ships. ok. Thank you.
You’re a “Veteran” forum warrior but do you even play the game? You give bad advice like that and people see “Veteran”. Shame.
Instead of criticism, maybe you can correct his advice?
Or you narrow down the ship you’re looking for at PxMy and tunnel vision so hard you ignore the “Dark Blood Control Tower” and warp to it, only to get zapped by a Death Star.
His bad advice was corrected, as you yourself noted above.
With his “Veteran” status, @Geo_Eclipse_Oksaras shouldn’t give advice on subjects that he doesn’t understand.
Maybe you’re right. I don’t know how much he knows… But I like Geo Eclipse. He’s been helpful several time already.
Also, it’s not a crime. Maybe he overlooked something or made a mistake. No need to take his head off.
Thank you for affirming my deduction.
Do have a good day and take care.
Yes, and to give more context, this is why combat probes exist: they can pinpoint the location of a non-cloaked ship anywhere in system, even when that ship is nowhere near anything “readily” warpable like celestials. That’s why I mentioned before that combat probes spook capsuleers: it means someone really wants to know where someone – (you!) – are and possibly give an unwanted lead-lined hailstorm greeting when landing beside you.
But combat probes themselves show up on DScan. So when they are out, anyone paying attention knows that trouble is brewing.
This leads to hunter/prey gameplay around creating bookmarks during warp (ctl+b is my hotkey) to create “safes” away-from/between celestials. They are “safe” except for combat probes – so not really safe. A lot of cat-and-dog chases within a system involve these “safe” bookmarks, combat probing, and (in nullsec) placement of warp disrupt bubbles to yank people out of warp.
Combat probes are sometimes overkill. If your target is in a belt, an anomaly, or by any other free-to-warp point (like a POCO) then simply DScanning is enough to figure out where they are and then warp to their grid. No warp point from probes needed, but they might be some kilometers distance from you, depending where they are in relation to the warp-in point.
Hence, DScan is a great tool, both for offensive and defensive purposes.
@Io_Koval
Outstanding.
Thanks!!
