Cosmic signatures

Probe Scanners,

Exploration is great content, but it’s limited by practical constraints. You can’t roam freely because many sites have ship-size limits, require nearby assets, or even multiboxing (e.g., AEGIS and gas sites, where uncompressed gas becomes a liability). As a result, exploration is effectively incentivized to stay in your home and nearby systems. On top of that, signatures don’t stay scanned after relogging, so you end up rescanning the same systems multiple times a day. Help?

Hello :smiley: The constraints on exploration come more from logistics and QoL than from risk. Ship-size limits and site mechanics push specialization, but they also discourage roaming and favor staying local. Gas sites especially punish solo mobility since uncompressed gas ties you to assets or alts. Signature rescanning is meant to keep intel temporary, but it becomes repetitive with frequent relogs. Exploration doesn’t need to be safer — it needs less tedium and fewer logistical hoops to stay enjoyable. :victory_hand:

There are plenty of sites you can do in an exploration frigate without swapping ships.

Skip the ones that require other ships if you’re not near a place where you can swap ships.

Or stay near a base with spare ships if you wish to be able to swap ships.

Or, bring an exploration ship like the Odysseus and mobile depot so you can huff gas, fight and do relic and data sites. You could even explore with a friend in an Odysseus and have spare ships to swap between in the ship maintenance bay.

Plenty of meaningful choices to make.

Problem solved?

Open the built in Notepad utility, after scanning the cosmic sigs, drag and drop to Notepad. Next time you need to scan simply compare notes. You could also drop a location marker on each site, or take a screen shot. There are several ways to avoid scanning the same thing over and over.

I did this when I lived inside a wormhole. I only scanned once to twice per day. Very little changes over 24 hours inside wormholes. The anomalies only clear when they get completed by a user or the system resets them.

Wait why does uncompressed gas become a liability? Just fill up and go home right? And if someone is at the gate and tries to blap your venture, most frigates that can lock will melt due to gate guns in low sec, and if you lose a venture… it’s a venture.

Exactly. The only time to get weepy over a loss is a full Miasmos hauling gas. The cargo would be worth 200 million or more. I don’t mind the empty ones, it is those full to the max with something like Lime Mykoserocin.

Just for example, here is a venture with lime;

Here is a miasmos with lime;

I can only imagine the pain, if it was compressed. The loss could be billions! :open_mouth:
Not picking on their loss, because I am experienced with loss.

Or use a sig mapping tool like tripwire or pathfinder, they’re designed to keep track of WH chains, but will keep track of scanning sites just fine.

Actually I’d say the system is designed to encourage you to go way out there. Back when I was scanning a lot, I’d often go on 50 jump roams, at the end I’d just scan out a wormhole chain back home (and find a lot of sites doing that as well!)

I dive into wormholes and sometimes don’t see highsec for days. Pop out into nullsec, do the sites in and around wherever that may be, then go back in and find the next static to nullsec.

@Trevor_Dalech What ship did you use for 50 jump roams?

@TiberianSun371AlexWJust fill up and go home
You fill up fast if you cant compress, but gas mining probably wouldnt be as lucrative if that somehow was changed.

Check out these sites I found. From what I understand, only one can be done solo (The Mainframe)

Alpha miners. such as myself, cannot compress the gas. When or if the compressed ore is worth the effort, I can find a player own refinery with compression facility. I seek something nearby and not over 8 jumps to Jita. If CCP allowed alphas to compress gas, the market may indeed drop a bit. I would still keep my packets small, in case I ran upon gankers.
