Scanning

Beyond sick and tired of scanning nothing but wormholes (1 system, 5/8 worms)…finally, when I do get a relic or data site, they disappear mid scan because someone is already on them. Or the level is too hard to scan down so time is wasted.

If you’re looking for just relic and/or data sites I can recommend scanning in LS or NS space.

Wormhole space may be nice, but it has a lot of extra signatures that exist just to move around.

appreciate that, but my point is it’s nothing BUT scanning down wormholes… like I said you can be mid-scan any other site and if someone completes it, you’ve wasted your time.

what space are you scanning from?

I hear you. Sometimes I wish they would revamp the cosmic signature mechanics, and the analyzer mini game. Make it at least scalable and have a transparent option.

If the are too many folks in the trails, go deeper into the woods.

If you are in Caldari space, vacate, Minmatar, Gallente, Amarr space is less populated and more opportunities to find these sites.

My suggestion, you can fly a Stratios that can do all the sites and combat anoms, but if you want a cheaper option you can go with a Gnosis, however if you pick up an escalation you may not be able to enter.

Someone completing the site while you are scanning it happens, but is very rare.

It is also something you can see happening on your directional scanner, because the other player will be decloaked and in space to finish the site, so on your directional scanner.

More common in competition with other explorers is that another explorer scans faster than you and arrives at the site before you. You also can see that happening with your directional scanner as you can see their probes moving.

In short: see extra probes on dscan? See another exploration ship on dscan? You have competition!

Move over to the next system and hope it’s empty. Space is large.

As you get better at the scanning game with both character skills, your skills as player and equipment on your ship you will improve as explorer and be the one that reaches sites first.

Reaching sites first may help you when you’re in allied space or in high sec space where the competition won’t kill you, but anywhere else like in wormholes you still need to be wary of other explorers who reach the site after you got there, because they may want to kill you.

In short: improve your probe scanning scanning and directional scanner game.

First, if you’re scanning for data/relic sites anywhere in highsec, stop that stupidity. There are more explorers there than anywhere else in the game, and thus the most competition. Nothing wrong with basing in highsec, but you’re not going to make any decent ISK there. Those wormholes you’re complaining about are actually the key to riches for an explorer.

When you scan down a wormhole, warp to it and look at the info. If it leads to Nullsec or Lowsec, dip through it, make sure to bookmark the other side, and start your exploration from there. Better sites and less competition, for just a bit more risk. You will have to learn to pay attention to your surroundings while hacking, but after a couple losses you’ll figure it out.

For an explorer, the areas outside highsec aren’t that much more dangerous. If someone’s already in system, move on and don’t probe that system, they’re cloaked in the site waiting to ambush you. If you start in lowsec, you won’t have to worry about bubbles on gates, so if you have your align time down low enough, you’ll escape most gate camps.

Now that you’ve looked at location as a cause, how are your scanning support skills? Take the time to train them to 4, it’s only a few days, and you’ll have the ability to probe down everything except level 5 sigs.

Lastly, how is your exploration ship fit? Not using a Magnate, are you? Because 3 mid slots makes a terrible hacking ship. Are you using Gravity Capacitor Upgrade rigs or any mid-slot scanning upgrades? Got Sister’s launcher and probes for their bonus?

I would only add this, filaments are your best friend for getting into and out of low/null.

Ah, yeah. I spend most of my time inside wormholes, so I forget those exist most of the time.

How do you guys get out of WH efficiently, every time I go in it just seems to chain one WH to another endlessly unless I go out the way I got in.

The main method is to go out the way you came in, do watch for end-of-life wormholes though, as your way back may collapse.

Aside from that, all low class (C1-C3) wormholes have known space (hi, low, null) statics, meaning there’s always a guaranteed way out if you stick to those WHs. This may be on the other side of the galaxy though…

I think there’s also some trickery with filaments that people use, but I don’t have too much experience with that.

I start in them.

I’ve got half a dozen alts in a C4/C3 based around a DST that spends most of its time safe logged. As I use up the supplies I brought in the DST, I fill it with sleeper loot. When I run out of ammo, time to take the loot back to k-space.
